- Chard & District Museum/Heritage CentreVisitors wanting to visit the Museum during the months of November to March can do so via our Book a Visit button. Chard Museum exists to help today's community uncover yesterday's heritage, history and hidden stories. It is a small local museum based in Chard Somerset. It opened in 1970 and celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2020. Exhibits in the museum tell the story of the town and the local area including geology, the fire of 1577, the Monmouth Rebellion, local lace, the Lace Riots and the rise and fall of industrial Chard. Outside there is a blacksmith's forge and display of farm machinery. Much of which made by local firm Denings of Chard. There are significant displays on notable people with connections to the town. This includes John Stringfellow, who with another local man William Samuel Henson achieved the first powered flight, in 1848, in a disused lace factory, with a 10-foot (3m), steam-driven flying machine.Read more
- Ferne Animal SanctuaryFerne Animal Sanctuary, founded 1939, provides care and refuge for unwanted domestic animals, farm animals and horses. Set within the Blackdown Hills, it is the perfect place to enjoy peace and tranquillity. Entry will give you a glimpse into the life of a working sanctuary and all proceeds go towards the care of our animals. We are home to nearly 300 animals, they all have their own needs, and can be shy, so you may see a few or lots, depending on when you come and the weather. While you may not see all our animals, with our trails and Creative Corner (Wed – Sun from 11am) there is always something fun to do. You can also stop at Nina’s Café for locally sourced produce and home-baked goods - you can even visit Nina’s without entering the Sanctuary. Or, if you would like to find out more about our animals, why not book a Behind the Scenes tour, or purchase a Hoof level sponsorship, which includes a farm experience.
