Holiday Rental House
This 300 - 400 year old historic house is in the village square of the 1st village liberated on D Day 6th June 1944. Awarded 4* rating by French Ministry Tourism, the photo shows the 101st Airborne, who became known as The Band of Brothers, passing in front of the house on June 7th 1944. Our location is literally in the footsteps of the invasion...every vehicle that landed on Utah Beach came past our front door, in those days our house was a shop so who knows who stopped off there! But! We are not all war...it's a beautiful area steeped in other histories. Located right opposite the world famous Sainte Marie du Mont Church, the view out the bedroom has been described as one of the best in France... wake up looking at the ornate and unique bell tower, but do not worry the bells stop ...This 300 - 400 year old historic house is in the village square of the 1st village liberated on D Day 6th June 1944. Our location is literally in the footsteps of the invasion...every vehicle that landed on Utah Beach came past our front door, in those days our house was a shop so who knows who stopped off there! But! We are not all war...it's a beautiful area steeped in other histories. Located right opposite the world famous Sainte Marie du Mont Church, the view out the bedroom has been described as one of the best in France... wake up looking at the ornate and unique bell tower, but do not worry the bells stop during the night! Totally renovated in 2014, retaining the character and history. The 1st floor, walls were knocked out to create the most gloriously proportioned master bedroom, plus small double bedroom sharing a large family bathroom room with a substantial Italian walk-in shower and double sink unit. On the top floor is another huge bedroom with en-suite. Downstairs we have created an open plan area, the lounge with a very efficient wood burner, leading into the dining room and onto the kitchen with Aga, out to the very sweet high walled garden with BBQ and patio...also downstairs a utility room with washing machine, tumble drier and a separate loo. Open the front door, one side you have shellfish shop selling oysters and moules direct from Utah Beach, by just walking the length of the corridor you can return to the dining table with a dozen oysters for 9€ - fresher than any oysters possible as these come less than 4 miles, people come from miles to buy these specialist oysters! The other side, 2 restaurants to choose from, across the street a local butcher, 2 bakers in the village, even a hairdresser... The house with restored antique furniture, hand made curtains, even embroidered the towels, along with all the things a traveller will appreciate to include towelling dressing gowns, shampoo and other toiletries. The cupboards in the kitchen are stocked with oils, condiments, herbs, stock cubes etc. if my chickens are laying some freshly laid eggs from our little farm. WIFI throughout, washing machine, tumble drier...TV, DVD player. Included in our price is a printed war tour, for you to do at your own pace, a complete overview of the area, maps, all linens, beds are made up for you, water, heating, electricity, paper goods, even down to dishwasher tablets and naturally the end of stay clean. This summer, Saturdays were incredibly busy again on the motorways, we encourage folk to arrive mid week & enjoy the weekend here as there is always something going on especially in the summer months...the only day of the week we can't operate is a Sunday, after 16 years here, we've had to adopt the French way of life! Mont St Michel an hour away, Bayeux, American Cemetery, Omaha, Sword, Gold, Juno the other invasion Beaches less than 40 minutes, Point du Hoc Grandcamp Maisy just the other side of the bay can be seen from the village. Carentan, Ste Mere Eglise all a matter of minutes away...then there is the Park Regional that we are in the heart of, a conservation area and an area of significant importance, with the marshes that flood in the winter and in the summer are grazing for the world class trotting horses bred here and the famous Normandy cows, walks, bike rides, coastline, dunes, cliffs, the beautiful Utah Beach is less than 4 minutes away which is not just a memorial but a gloriously sandy beach with Oyster beds, seals that pop up beside swimmers from time to time, amazing bird life as there is a 1,200 hectare bird sanctuary on the beach, dolphins even seen, safe to swim, clean and not over crowded. We have been living locally for the past 16 years plus running vacation rentals locally for the past 14 years with 3 other properties advertised on here, it is very easy to check us out, we are not owners that throw you the key leave you get on with it, we really want you to enjoy your time here in this glorious part of France. Interaction with guests
We have a key safe but we meet our guests, give you an overview of the area, explain how everything works especially the Aga & then we leave it to you. However note please, we cannot do this on a Sunday or after 6 p.m.Needing car hire ? We can arrange it all for you - For example, If you are flying into France we can arrange for a chauffeur to meet you in the arrivals hall to take you to the station (or your hotel) and on your arrival at Carentan station a driver will be waiting for you as you alight the train to take you to your car hire. As we don't have Sunday trading here and certainly when it's a big holiday nothing is trading. The main car hire companies close for a 2 hour lunch still, even in the major cities and Sunday's are tricky

About the neighbourhood
Sainte Marie du Mont the 1st village liberated in France on 6th June 1944 by 101st Airborne, Screaming Eagles, later to depicted in The Band of Brothers serialisation by Stephen Speilburg & Tom Hanks. The village is the 1st village from Utah Beach 3 miles away, has a beautiful world famous church, our house is on the church square with views of the domed tower. But, we're not all war, we're in the heart of a National Park with considerable conservation importance, it's Normandy so there is a huge amount of culture, history, artists, coastal areas, countryside, fishing ports, nature, rivers, lakes even an area named Swiss Normandy. Bayeux is 30 minutes from us where the tapestry is, Caen where William the Conqueror is buried just a little further on from Bayeux, we've had Vikings, Romans, ...
Getting around
You need a car...if you don't want to drive from Paris then get the train to Carentan, 8 miles away & I can organize car hire to meet & pick you up at the station here.
