About the neighbourhood
We are situated in the Upper Towy valley an area called 'Little Switerzerland,' by the locals. It is a gateway into the undiscovered Cambrian Mountains, where red kites glide on unseen thermals and vast open moorland and moutains drop down into tumbling mountain streams and gorges. Explore the forests, valleys and shores of Llyn Brianne reservoir in utter solitude, no crowds, no queues, just clean mountain air, beautiful scenery and a feeling of peace and tranquillity. Rhandirmwyn means valley of the minerals where lead used to be mined in the last century, the Dolaucothi Gold Mines are close by and you can take a fascinating underground tour or try your luck at panning for gold. Search for Twm Sion Catti's cave at the Dinas Bird Reserve, there is a walk round the reserve that follows the River Towy as it cascades over huge glacial boulders, it's spetacular and Twm's cave is hidden in the hillside. If you crave excitement and an adrenalin rush then hurtling down the new mountain bike trail at Cwm Rhayder should suffice but for those who want to take in the beautiful scenery at a more leisurely pace then walks up the the waterfall have been described by some of our guests as a hidden fairy glen. Llandovery market town is seven miles away and has a collection of pubs, shops and a heritage centre, this truly is a land of myths and legends and here you can learn about 'The Lady of the Lake' and the 'Physicians of Myddfai.' Rhandirmwyn has a village shop and a local pub that serves good food and a selection of real ales, Cilycwm village, which lies in the opposite direction has a lovely country pub that serves delicious home cooked food and further along the valley towards the mountains is the small village of Ffarmers where the Drovers Arms serves excellent local welsh cuisine. Come to Penrhyn to unwind, relax by the river, try your hand at fly fishing, trek across the mountains, speed down forestry trails on a mountain bike, or seek out ancient legends and explore castles and Celtic market towns.
