The island by itself is just gorgious and Puffin cottage was a restful and comfortable home after the whole day outside. By foot you have Spar and Coop open till 10.00 pm. 3 comfortable bedrooms and 2 with WC. Kitchen fully equipped. Bathroom with modern and very clean shower. Wifi, computer, TV with all options. A small terrace to appreciate...

I apologise for taking so long to respond, it's been very busy, however, never too busy to thank you for the lovely description of Puffin Cottage you have written. I have always looked on Puffin as a house that I would like to stay in not just a characterless rental property, some of the furnishings in the house have been...

It was my idea to come to Islay, but my mother's idea to come to Puffin Cottage. It was the perfect location, size, and comfort. Lyle was so open to communication (though it was my mother in contact most of the time). It was cozy and clean, and let us feel like we had always been in Port Ellen. The...

Management response:

Hi there, thanks for the lovely comments in your review and I note also about the "burrow". We do try to accommodate guests requirements as much as we can and do mention the restricted height access to the "burrow" which is ideal for children. If you had let me know in advance that your brother had been assigned that room...

Great Location. Well outfitted. Worked well for us except that it was odd having to climb through a small door in one upstairs bedroom to get to the third bedroom.

Management response:

Thank you so much for your kind review. I noted that you mentioned the "Puffling Burrow" this room is ideal for families and the children love it! We do say on the website that there is restricted height access and that it's is reached off the middle bedroom. Perfect for children and "young at heart" adults. I am so pleased...

About the neighbourhood
The area around Port Ellen is amazing and fascinating, from the Kildalton Cross, a symbol of the earliest Christianity in this Isle of Islay to the equally magnificent headland called the Mull Of Oa facing out across the Atlantic Ocean toward America and Ireland. Within a decent walking distance can be found the distilleries of Laphraoig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg all of which delight in showing visitors the art and magic of making Uisge Beatha, (The Water of Life) and the tasting afterward!
Port Ellen has two beaches of it's own, Loch Leodamais to the east and Port Ellen to the west where the famous Islay Beach Rugby Festival is held on the 2nd Saturday in June with invitation teams from all over GB. Both are safe shallow bays ideal for children building sand castles yet still in the he...

How to get there
Airport: Islay: 8.0 km
Ferry: Port Ellen: 0.1 km
There are two ferry ports on Islay, Port Ellen in the South and Port Askaig in the N.E of the island. Calmac who operate the ferries to the Highlands and Islands have split the timetable to allow both ports to be used equally, although in bad weathers it tis the more sheltered Port Askaig that is favoured. There are several ferry crossings each day leaving Kennacraig on the Mull of Kintyre and the sailing takes between 2/2.5 hours depending on the destination. For travellers with their own marine transportation there is a new marina in Port Ellen next to the Pier Head, and lovely little sheltered harbours at Bowmore, Port Charlotte and Portnahaven.FlyBe operated by Loganair fly out of Glasgow twice a day to Islay Airport situated at Glenegadale 8kms from Port Ellen and right next to the be... more
