The Vineyard Cottage was originally part of a traditional stable block and has been extended and refurbished, retaining the exposed beams and split stable-style front door. Shaded in summer by an old quince tree with wisteria, roses and honeysuckle growing around the front, the cottage is situated in the courtyard at The Vineyard, an 18th century converted barn in the attractive, peaceful village of Clifton Hampden, South Oxfordshire which is four miles from Abingdon, eight miles from Oxford and just an hour from London. The cottage has its own large, private south facing terrace, partially shaded by a pergola, with two grapevines and climbing roses and the only sounds you will hear when you wake in the morning are the birds singing and the trees rustling in the breeze. A teak table with four comfortable chairs with cushions, a sun umbrella and a Weber barbecue will help make the most of sunny days and long summer evenings. (The terrace is accessed via six steps and so is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible). The second bedroom and bathroom are situated on the ground floor. The beds in this room can be arranged as either one single bed, twin beds or one queen size bed Please advise on booking which layout you would prefer. This bedroom is more easily accessible for disabled or elderly guests. There is also a disabled shower stool available. If you would prefer to use the downstairs bedroom instead of the upstairs one when booking for two people, please let me know when you book. Also, if you are staying as two friends and want to use both bedrooms as singles, please let me know in advance, so as to avoid any misunderstandings. Babies and children are always welcome and they will love the visiting ducks and wild rabbits in the garden and Red Kites frequently circle overhead. We also have a swing and a slide they can enjoy. We have a travel cot available with bedding, baby bath (tummy tub), changing mat, highchair and safety gate for the stairs. Please let us know if you would like to use any of these items when booking. There is a free Wi-Fi connection, an i-pod dock, local guide books, novels, family games and DVD's for adults and children available for your enjoyment. A useful supply of teabags, instant coffee, sugar, olive oil, kitchen and toilet rolls, washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets are available. A free bottle of wine is included for bookings of a week or longer. Environmentally friendly and non-animal tested cleaning products are used wherever possible. UPGRADED - Now there is a king size bed in upstairs bedroom too. 10% discount given to all returning guests! More

We had a lovely stay at Vineyard Cottage this summer. It's a very quiet area but just 10 minutes from Abingdon, where the children attended a summer camp. Perfect for exploring surroundings as Stonehenge, Cotswolds, Winchester and Salisbury Cathedral, Oxford and even London.

Very enjoyable holiday at Vineyard Cottage. Facilities were excellent and the location is surrounded by beautiful, quiet countryside. Really like the walks Fiona suggests in the information pack which run past Clifton Lock. Worthwhile visits to Burford, Gloucester cathedral and Bletchley park. Took a boat...More

About the neighbourhood
The River Thames is close by for fishing and boating and the local pub The Barley Mow (as mentioned in Three Men and a Boat by Jerome K Jerome) is a short walk away and serves local beers and food with an enclosed garden. Walking is a favourite local pastime especially on the towpath along the Thames. The village shop/post office sells basic groceries, newspapers, milk, freshly baked bread, croissants and there are several large supermarkets just a short drive away.Abingdon is the oldest inhabited town in England and its museum of local history on the main square was recently completely refurbished and is now accessible to everyone, with a cafe in the basement. There is a regular Farmers Market in the main square and this is also where special royal occasions are uniquely celebrated wit...
Getting around
There is a small railway station (Culham) about 15 minutes walk from the cottage which is useful for trains into Oxford and which run every 2 hours or so. It is also possible to get trains to London but it is a slow route taking up to 90 minutes, so it can be quicker to travel first to Didcot Parkway or Oxford station (via train or car) and then catch the express train, which only takes about 40 minutes. There is a long stay car park at Didcot. There is no longer a local bus service.
