The Vineyard Cottage was originally part of a traditional stable block and has been extended and refurbished, retaining the exposed beams and split stable-style front door. Shaded in summer by an old quince tree with wisteria, roses and honeysuckle growing around the front, the cottage is situated in the courtyard at The Vineyard, an 18th century converted barn in the attractive, peaceful village of Clifton Hampden, South Oxfordshire which is four miles from Abingdon, eight miles from Oxford and only an hour from London.

Lovely quiet setting , it's got everything you could possible need . Can't recommend it enough really , will definitely book again next year . Very pretty area , with lovely walks .

We had a lovely stay at Vineyard Cottage this summer. It's a very quiet area but just 10 minutes from Abingdon, where the children attended a summer camp. Perfect for exploring surroundings as Stonehenge, Cotswolds, Winchester and Salisbury Cathedral, Oxford and even London.

Very enjoyable holiday at Vineyard Cottage. Facilities were excellent and the location is surrounded by beautiful, quiet countryside. Really like the walks Fiona suggests in the information pack which run past Clifton Lock. Worthwhile visits to Burford, Gloucester cathedral and Bletchley park. Took a boat from Abington to Oxford, which was fun (nearly missed the boat on the way back)....

About the neighbourhood
The River Thames is close by for fishing and boating and the local pub The Barley Mow (as mentioned in Three Men and a Boat by Jerome K Jerome) is a short walk away and serves local beers and food with an enclosed garden. Walking is a favourite local pastime especially on the towpath along the Thames. The village shop/post office sells basic groceries, newspapers, milk, freshly baked bread, croissants and there are several large supermarkets just a short drive away.Abingdon is the oldest inhabited town in England and its museum of local history on the main square was recently completely refurbished and is now accessible to everyone, with a cafe in the basement. Getting around
There is a small railway station about 15 minutes walk from the cottage which is useful for trains into Oxford and which run every 2 hours or so.
It is also possible to get trains to London but it is a slow route taking up to 90 minutes, so it can be quicker to travel first to Didcot or Oxford station and then catch an express train, which only takes about 40 minutes.
There is no longer a local bus service.
