Castine is a walking town; everything is within reach, including the waterfront at the village center, the beach at the back shore with a salt water swimming pool, the lighthouse and the Town Common, where lots of summer events take place. The cottage is ideal for a family or two couples, with a full bath; a quarter bath is attached to the Master Bedroom. The yard is safe for kids to play and the town itself is very safe. Castine Golf Club is a block away, and includes 5 HarTru tennis courts. Lessons in both sports are offered during the summer, both in group and private lessons. There are also informal clinics open to all. The Castine Yacht Club is down at the waterfront and offers sailing lessons for all. Exploratory cruises in the Penobscot Bay are offered by the schooner 'Guildive', which will take you on short outings, or day-long trips to Searsport and the Penobscot Maritime Museum. Kayak trips and lessons are available and sunset paddles are a favorite. Dining in Castine is always a pleasure: Get your breakfast coffee and pastries from MarKel's Bakehouse, your lunch from Dudley's on the Town Dock, your pub food at Danny Murphy's (with sports). Casual dining presents itself at The Wharf on Sea Street or at the Castine Variety (with an ice-cream window!); elegant dining at the Pentagoet Inn or The Manor, seated breakfast at The Castine Inn. Exploring the greater area might include day trips to Acadia National Park, picnic adventures down to Stonington on Deer Isle, a seminar at The Wooden Boat School or an artists exploration in Blue Hill. You might even decide to take an overnight camping trip to America's newest, Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. Access is easy via Bangor International Airport or Portland International; drive from Boston and explore more seacoast along the way. Email or call with any questions: I'm happy to provide information about the area. More

Estabrooke cottage was an exceptionally fine rental. It was extremely well provisioned; excellent modern appliances, very comfortable and clean with both a family room out to a private deck and a living room which was very nice but which we seldom used. The cottage is...More

Robert, I am so pleased you and Jewel enjoyed Castine. Glad that Estabrooke worked out well for, too. I'd be delighted to host you again; come and relax for a couple weeks next time!

About the neighbourhood
The Penobscot Bay region is a rugged, rock-ribbed, supremely gorgeous place, regardless of weather. Acadia National Park is about an hour away (recommend weekday visits, as wkends are jammed). The nearby peninsulas include the treasured villages & farms of Blue Hill, Surry, Penobscot, Deer Isle, Stonington ... all of which offer seasonal eating and exploring.
Getting around
A car is a necessity. The only public transportation is the bus from Boston to Bangor, via Portland. Sometimes it's easier to get around by boat.
