The property is 2mins from the Arahura River - an important source of pounamu (jade) on the West Coast. Wander the river banks to see if you can find you own piece of jade. We are only a 5min drive to the beach which is a beautifully wild place filled with amazing driftwood and pebbles - a great place for a bonfire. ** Please note your bedroom is upstairs**. *As we are off-grid we do not have A/C, microwave, electric blankets, clothes dryer or dishwasher.*

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

Nice farm animals & location but untidy & non-accommodating, I cannot recommend
Based on bookings.com’s reviews (9,1/10) I booked this accommodation for four nights for three-four adults and two kids, one family room and one “normal” room. I write this review because my impression was not so positive, and I want to make other travellers aware of the real status of this accommodation. The good things were the 1) variety of farms animals: four rabbits, hens with chickens, three turkeys, three pigs, two peacocks (!), sheep (which unfortunately were too fearful to be hand-fed) and cows 2) rural location but close enough to Hokitika if you have a car. Go down to the river by driving the blue spur road a bit further after the turn to German Road. 3) the size of the family room. One big bed (big enough for three), and three single beds. The negative experiences that overshadowed the good: A) Untidy appearance. Lots of stuff everywhere. The toys and games were lovely, but there are things everywhere, which makes cleaning impossible. There is so much dust, on shelves, under beds, on the blinds... The sheets in the beds, the towels and the bathroom are clean enough though. The windows were dirty. B) Lack of genuine hospitality. Michelle acted correctly, but nothing beyond that. Her husband hardly greeted, although we met upfront. (If you want to experience true hospitality - book yourself into a farm stay at Ahaura Lodge and Waterwheel - Auntie Robyn and Uncle Malcom are AMAZING.) C) Other things like super small table in the room, a square of 50/60cm and two chairs, small hotel type of fridge, meagre breakfast, questionable keeping of rabbits (plastic mat on the ground for the three of them, net cage for one. We had a rabbit farm with 300 rabbits when I grew up, so I believe I know something about it. However, the rabbits were all looking good. They only would need some normal environment for rabbits,). There were some hilarious parts, too. There were notification not to enter the pen for the turkeys and the pigs. No need to - the turkeys and pigs walked/flied in and out from the pen as they pleased :-D. Summa summarum: this is not a B&B because of the meagre breakfast & service, (no eggs, no bacon, no friendly chats), not a hotel or motel (untidy, you sleep on the same floor, next doors to the owners) - it is a odd place. Stay one night at the most, not suitable for longer stays.

About the neighbourhood
Hokitika is the perfect place to base yourself while exploring the West Coast. All the best attractions are only a short drive away including: Franz Joseph Glacier, Punakaiki blowholes, Hokitika Gorge (take insect repellent!), Lake Kaniere, Hokitika Treetop Walkway and Shantytown. Hokitika is famous for it's pounamu (jade/greenstone) carving and there are many local galleries showcasing the beautiful stone. There are many easy bush walks close to our house, the closest winds through an old goldmine site dating back to the 1800's. Take a walk through Hokitika town and see some of the sights mentioned in the Booker Prize winning author, Eleanor Catton's book, The Luminaries. There are lots of wonderful places in town to eat: grab a pizza from Fat Pipi Pizza, try some fine dining at Stations Inn or a beautiful pub meal at the Kaniere Hotel. Fish & chips on the beach is another great option. If you have a sweet tooth - try some homemade fudge from Sweet Alice's shop. Visit the local jade carving studios, gaze at the amazing jewelery crafted at TP Goldsmiths on Revell Street. Check out the massive eels at the Kiwi Centre and of course see the kiwi. You really need at least two days in Hokitika to see most of the attractions.
