A beautifully restored apartment in the historic former town hall in the centre of Hay on Wye, Wales, known for its’ second-hand bookshops, literary festival and stunning local scenery. Built c1835 as Hay's town hall, the building was rescued by the community, sensitively restored and reopened in 2014. The elegant flat, formerly the manorial courtroom, is light and airy, with original features, double height ceiling and windows looking over the medieval Hay Castle. A great base to explore Hay's boutique shops, walk the beautiful countryside or simply curl up with a good book by the fire. --- The space The double height ceiling and original large sash windows ensure the flat feels bright and airy, yet the triple glazing keeps sound to a minimum. You would never know you were right in the middle of Hay on Wye! The bed is a comfy King Size, with luxury down duvet and pillows, and crisp white bed linen, giving guests the comfiest night's sleep. Towels and guest soap are provided. There are artworks by local artists dotted around the flat, including an impressive ceramic frieze by Hay Maker's potter, Pat Birks, and beautiful prints by Aine Venables, Artist-in-Residence for the annual Hay Festival of Literature. The kitchen has everything you could need for your self-catering stay: breakfast tea, herbal teas, ground coffee, store cupboard essentials, and is well equipped with utensils, crockery, a good range of pans, an electric oven and hob, fridge (with freezer compartment for those all essential G+T ice cubes), microwave, dishwasher and toaster. There is an internet-connected smart TV, with BBC iplayer, etc, and for you to access any of your on demand subscriptions (Netflicks, Amazon etc). We also have a DVD player and small number of DVDs should you fancy a night in with your feet up. No property in Hay would be complete without a well-stocked bookshelf, and the Cheese Market is no exception. There is a good selection of fiction/novels, some by local authors - Owen Sheers, Barbara Erskine, etc - and a number of local interest books, specific to Hay and the region, and local guidebooks. There is also a drawer with lots of leaflets and information on things to do in and around Hay. Building for the community The Hay Cheese Market building was rescued by the community, restored and re-opened in 2014. The building is managed by the Hay on Wye Community Enterprise CIC (a Community Interest Company). Profits from the rental of the Hay Cheese Market holiday let are put into The Hay Fund, a fund where local people and community groups can apply for small grants for projects to benefit the community in and around Hay on Wye.More

About the neighbourhood
Hay on Wye is situated on the River Wye, the border between England and Wales, in the foothills of the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons. The town of Hay boasts the largest number of second hand bookshops in the world, a range of restaurants and pubs serving delicious local produce, boutique independent shops and traditional stores run by local families that have been here for generations. The area offers visitors’ access to a wide range of attractions, from river sports to mountain walks, more medieval castles than anywhere else in the world, prehistoric sites, fascinating churches, festivals, gardens and many other attractions.
Getting around
There is plenty to see and do in Hay, and many walks from the front door of the apartment, but if you'd like to take advantage of the area and all it has to offer, then a car could be a good option
