About the neighbourhood
The ancient medieval walled town of Obidos just is a short walk from villa with its cobbled streets lined with houses shops gifts and crafts a plenty, bars restaurants and many churches.there is also a post office, pharmacy internet cafe ,garage and tourist office in walking distance,. There are numerous festivals held throughout the year to be enjoyed these include the World Chocolate making festival, Easter festival, Medieval festival Piano and opera festival, and Christmas festival. The Obidos lagoon is about 10 min drive for fishing boating and water sports.Great surfing beaches within 20 minutes drive. The magnificent historical town of Óbidos, located some 80 km Northwest of Lisbon, only a few kilometers away from the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the most beautiful and picturesque sites of the Iberian Peninsula. Founded by the Celts in 308 BC, Óbidos was conquered by the Romans in the first century and occupied by the Moors in the eighth century. The latter built the town wall, which still today is completely intact surrounding the white washed houses painted with blue or yellow bars. The medieval town of Óbidos with its castle, churches and historic monuments, is blessed with a moderate climate where the warm southern sunshine mingles with a cool mountain breeze. The natural enchantment of Óbidos, the traditional hospitality of its inhabitants and the Portuguese regional culinary delights including fresh seafood and local wines turn this place into a must for any tourist visiting Portugal. The lagoon of Obidos is the largest sea-water lagoon in Portugal, and provides a wonderful array of activities to those who chance to enjoy this experience. It has an average depth of 2 meters, and extensive areas from it's sandy beach surround extend only to half a meter making a truly family orientated place to be ! Some water sports are available too, since in certain parts the depth reaches 5 meters making water-skiing and other activities easily suitable. At the junction of the lagoon and the sea, the sandy beaches extend around on both sides and visitors have the choice to enjoy the Atlantic waves or the quite and relatively still waters of the lagoon - all from the same beach ! Around the perimeter of the lagoon, there are beautiful quite walks and cycle tracks embracing the pine woods, beach side restaurants and on the north side, the lovely small village of Foz which bodes several fish restaurants, cafe's and beach-side amenities. To the nearside of the lagoon, is the lovely peaceful Praia Do Bom Sucesso - miles of soft white sanded beach surrounding the lagoon creating safe swimming & bathing for all.The city of Caldas da Rainha is 5km away with great shopping, daily outdoor fresh fruit and vegetable market and town park with children's playground, boating lake and museum. A new indoor shopping center has opened in the town center a multi-screen cinema that shows movies in English. There are several beach resorts and 5 star golf courses within 15-20 minutes drive from the villa. The well known golf resort of Praia del Rey is 15 minutes drive away with two more 5 star golf courses in Obidos due for completion in the near future. Beautiful beaches such as Sao Martinho do Porto ,Foz Da Relho, Baleal, are fifteen minutes drive away Further afield just 30 minutes drive are the lovely fishing towns of Nazare and Peniche...... The historical monastery and picturesque town of Alcobacha, and the shrine of Fatima are also well worth a visit. There are vineyards 20 minutes drive from the villa where you can sample the fine champagne and wines of the region. Obidos is named after its wall fortifications, so it is worth your time to stroll around the city limits and look at some of these well-preserved structures that lend such a medieval air to the small city. The gate and main entrance into the city, called the Porta da Vila, is located at the south end of Obidos. As with any other major Portuguese town, Obidos has a main cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary called the Igreja de Santa Maria. This church dates back to the Middle Ages, when Portuguese Afonso Henriques first wrested control of Obidos from the Moors, who had owned much of the Iberian Peninsula since the fall of Rome. There is another, more recent church outside the city limits called the Santuário do Senhora da Pedro. Its architecture is more modern and its solitary presence upon a hill is quite imposing. The church's construction began in 1740, but parts of it were not finished until the 1900s. Also take some time to see the castle, which serves as a pousada. It overlooks the town from the hill at the center of Obidos. Other interesting landmarks throughout the city are the ancient village stocks (where petty criminals were punished) and an old aqueduct.Though many of Obidos's streets remain narrow and cobblestoned, there are also more modern buildings in the small city. For example, in front of the medieval Igreja de Santa Maria, there is the Espaço Internet do Concelho de Obidos, a free city Internet access point.

All of Obidos has been declared a national monument. It is known as the 'Wedding Present Town' because it was a gift King Dinis gave to Queen Isabel on their wedding day in 1282, but that alone is not what makes it such an extraordinarily romantic place -- what make it one of Europe's most romantic medieval villages are its incredibly picturesque cobblestone streets lined with colorful houses filled with geraniums and bougainvillea, Gothic doorways and windows, whitewashed churches, flowerpots and dazzling tiles -- all encircled by the walls of a 12th century castle. Scaling its 13m (45ft)-high medieval walls is the best way to admire this picture postcard-perfect place. The main street ('Rua Direita') leads from the town gate (decorated with 18th century tile panels) to the main square (Praça de Santa Maria). It has a beautiful fountain, a 15th century pillory, the Town Museum (with exhibits ranging from archaeological finds to 15-17th centuries sculpture and paintings), and Santa Maria Church. That's where 10-year-old King Afonso V married his 8-year-old cousin Isabel in 1444, with an interior entirely faced with tiles and containing the tomb of João de Noronha, the castle governor who died in 1575. Close by is Misericordia Church (with a fine Baroque doorway), while outside the walls is the Amoreira Aqueduct, built at the behest of Catherine of Austria in 1575. Every July a Medieval Fair recreates the Middle Ages with medieval music, knights, witches, and theater performances, and during the International Chocolate Festival in November, Obidos becomes the world's chocolate capital with incredible chocolate sculptures. The best way to experience the romantic atmosphere of the village is to stay overnight when most visitors are gone. You'll find yourself filled with medieval romance when you step outside and find the walls floodlit and the narrow alleys brightened by the moonlight this is delight of Villa Obidos as we are only 15min walk to the town's center.
