About the neighbourhood
Chester has many Roman ruins, including an Amphitheatre, fortified City Walls and the UK’s only rock shrine to the goddess Minerva. Chester is also famous for its medieval splendour, black and white timbered houses, its 1000 year old Cathedral and covered ‘Rows’ – a unique shopping experience that takes you back to the 14th century. The pedestrian cobbled streets make Chester a walkers’ paradise, yet you are never far from a tea shop or café. A highlight of any visit is the two mile stroll around the City Walls, taking in the main tourist attractions, like the Eastgate Clock, Roman Gardens and Tudor heritage – with fabulous views of the Chester Racecourse, the oldest in the country. Chester Zoo is also worth a visit, with its remarkable Zoofari monorail and monkey islands.
