Rural Village Retreat in Old School

1 of 5
Private Room , 1 Bathroom , Sleeps 4
Ambert, Puy-de-Dome, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes
In the heart of unspoilt France is our old village school, which has been beautifully and lovingly converted retaining all its character and vintage charm. The B&B suite is a comfortable loft occupying its own floor on the top floor of our family home. It is rented out as a whole unit, and not by bedroom, so no chance that you will be sharing the space with strangers! The suite can sleep up to 6 people, and comprises 2 bedrooms, a large living room/dining room, with an excellent sofa bed, and a shower room with toilet and handbasin. A sumptuous breakfast is included and we also provide evening meals upon request. Feel free to use the shared garden and orchard with its different seating areas, and just gaze at the view, or read a book. There are pretty towns and medieval villages to explore with their markets and festivals, chateaux, o... Read more

Andrew and Gail are the most easy-going, open and friendly people, which made my short stay very pleasant. Their hospitality is five-star. Funny how quickly I gained a feeling of having known them for longer than just a brief stay! The bed was extremely comfy....More

About the neighbourhood
The old school sits at an altitude of 1000m on the edge of the pretty village of Le Monestier in the Parc Naturel Regional Livradois Forez, with a shared garden and orchard, and views down into the valleys and across to the mountains. Le Monestier is an old village of stone built houses with a population of about 50 inhabitants in the summer months. A normally quiet and tranquil village, it comes alive for its very popular festivals and flea markets. The village is perched on a promontory with spectacular views from the Madonna statue at the highest point of the village. We are in the heart of the beautiful Livradois Forez Natural Park, an area of mountain pastures and forests with lowing cattle and wildflowers.
Getting around
Public transport is sketchy at best, a car is recommended and driving is a pleasure on the well kept and quiet roads, with a view at every turn. With its winding rural roads this is excellent motorcycle country! Off road motorcycling and mountain biking through the forests are also popular. Cycling on quiet rural roads, hiking on marked trails, with some starting at our village and strolling along the tiny lanes around the hamlets which make up our village all in peaceful rural splendour. Ambert has an aerodrome if you want to arrive by light aircraft. We can collect and return you there. Car hire is also available from Ambert. We offer a shuttle service from Clermont-Ferrand and St. Etienne airports and stations to the old school, please c
