Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.
Holiday rental reviews collected via the VRBO website (formerly Homeaway) and syndicated to the Tripadvisor website are not currently subject to Tripadvisor’s standard moderation processes.

Ahhhhhhh
We stayed in the main homestead with the family. They are a great family and Karen and Husband Bruce are some of the loveliest people you could meet. The accommodation is to a very high standard. It is so quiet here it's perfect for relaxing. There is no noise or light pollution so it's great at night for star gazing if the skies are clear. The breakfast was fantastic and Tasty and we wanted for nothing. We really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend that you stop here on trip of New Zealand . We will be coming back here when we head back down to NZ. If we were coming by ourselves then we would stay in the main house again but if we bring family we will definitely try out the bungalow.

beautiful isolated countryside with campfire by the river
Our family of six loved our visit to Karetu Downs. We camped there for 2 nights direct from Christchurch airport. We enjoyed the isolation compared with the busy camping grounds and loved having a few wines around our little campfire amidst the beautiful scenery. The kids loved feeding the lambs, the local hikes were great and Karen and Bruce are delightful people. Strongly reccommend this wonderful New Zealand country experience.

Sound of silence
My wife & I desperate needed to get out of Christchurch, & leave computers, cellphones & people behind. We arrived in our own good time to find the fire already lit in a very nicely presented house, hardly a cottage as advertised. We saw nobody all weekend, took short walks, read books, dozed on the comfy couches & even almost finished the 993 piece jigsaw puzzle. Hard to leave, but we'll be back!

Fabulous family get away
A wonderful place to go and spend a holiday where you can get totally away from it. The house is really comfortable and warm, the beds are lovely and the kitchen is well equipped. We really enjoyed being able to go out walking all over the farm and the kids loved being able to fetch the eggs. Can't wait to go again in the summer and swim in the river! Thanks for the amazing hospitality.

Stunning views & amazing hospitality, cosy accommodation - perfe
We have stayed at Karetu Downs Cottage twice in the last six months. It is a great place to head to for relaxing and doing something totally different from the normal working week. The kids love going rabbit shooting and fishing, they head off on their bikes and leave me to read my book - I love it. Bruce enjoys telling a farm tale and Karen welcomes you into her kitchen for a coffee or tea. There is no fuss, no stress just the total thrill of loading up the car on a Friday night and being there in approx 1 hour from home. My son nows says he is going to own a farm one day - just like Bruce's!

Best farm stay ever!
As a family with three kids, age 3,6 & 8, it was the most memorable and enjoyable experience from 3 weeks travelling around the South Island. This is a magical place and also easy access from Christchurch. The kids loved it just as much as the parents. Thank you to Bruce and Karen for such generous hospitality. Leif & Sara.
