Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.

Refresh on the farm
Such a special spot to get away to from the city. Our boys loved the animals...feeding and playing with them. Karen and Bruce are very generous with their time to show you around and talk farming. The cottage has everything including a lovely fire. This was our second stay and we will be back.

Great family holiday
We stayed at the Karetu Downs cottage with our three young children, we all had an amazing time - the location is beautiful and quiet, the hosts are friendly, and there's lots to do with the kids - walks, playing down at the river, exploring, feeding farm animals and playing with the dogs. The cottage itself is very spacious and very well equipped, clean and comfortable - possibly the best value for money accommodation you could find It's a bit of a drive from the nearest shops, so just need to be prepared with food etc, the kitchen is good for cooking in Would recommend Karetu Downs to anyone - 10/10

Thanks Marian-it was lovely meeting you and Jessica. We enjoyed your company and really loved showing you around the farm. We love giving our guests the opportunity of experiencing life on a real New Zealand farm complete with sheep shearing, feeding lambs, meeting Ginger and Wilbur the kune kune pigs and of course Barney the Donkey. Best wishes for a lovely Christmas-you are welcome to come back anytime Thanks so much x

Splendid stay, beautiful property,gracious hosts
On our trip to south island from Australia, we stayed at Karetu downs for two days. The farm house is big enough for two families and very well equipped. We had a relaxing stay with our one year old girl who enjoyed the roaming around in the garden, feeding the pet donkey, chasing sheep and much more. Karen was an excellent host and was really helpful during the stay. We went on for a picnic lunch near the waterway showing through the property which was great. We would love to go back and spend more time exploring and two days were not enough. I highly recommend this place for families and those who want to relax an soak into nature

Kiwi hospitality at its best
We stayed B&B in the homestead, which was akin to staying with family such was the relaxed and friendly manner of Karen and Bruce who shared their table with us as if we were indeed part of the family. Our accommodation could not be faulted; neither could the attention to detail. A bonus was the garden which was to host the local garden club the day we left. This is a place for adults to experience rural New Zealand and Kiwi hospitality at its best, and for children to enjoy adventures.

Beautiful location and very accommodating hosts
Spacious 4 bed cottage on beautiful farm by Waipara river. Perfect for family gatherings or large groups of friends. We have stayed twice in recent months and it will now be a frequent holiday spot for us. The hosts Karen and Bruce are very welcoming and go out of their way to make your stay as fun and easy as possible. Kids can feed farm animals twice a day and adults can borrow bikes, 4 wheel drive etc. Beautiful river 5 mins walk for fishing and swimming. Very relaxing area with beautiful scenery.

AWESOME PLACE TO STAY :-)
When we stayed at your place we had such a great time so thankyou so much. I still remember going out looking for rabbits the nite we got there and it was raining lol. Hope our son didnt leave too many carcasis behind? Going out on the bikes the next day was great as you have so many places to go and we all had lots of fun. Please say a huge thanks to Bruce for the loan of the other bike. It made the ride more enjoyable. I couldnt believe how big the mushrooms were and I dont eat them lol. Hope you have had lots of bookings since we stayed as its such a lovely place to get away from it all? Once again thanks

Perfect farmstay for families
We had a wonderful time at Karetu Downs. Karen and Bruce were wonderful hosts - introducing our young children to all the animals. They were very friendly and helpful and welcoming. Nothing was a problem. Plenty to do and lots walks and bike rides all on the doorstep.
