Holiday Rental House
Pefko Spiti (The Pine House) is a much loved family house built in traditional Ionian style, set into the hillside and surrounded by 4 acres of private natural garden leading to olive groves and natural forest that fall away to far reaching views over the Ionian Sea. Kephalonia provides the backdrop to this spectacular vista which, as the house faces south west, is best enjoyed at the end of the day in the warmth and golden hues of the setting sun. To bring you even closer to nature, the house is entirely self-sufficient in electricity, gas and water. Winter rains are stored under the house and pumped direct to the taps and hot water tank, whilst electricity and hot water are generated by solar panels. The house comprises two adjacent buildings, connected by a vine clad pergola and surrounded by terraces. The main house has an open plan living area of kitchen, dining area and sitting area. The first of the three bedrooms, a double, is accessed via a stairway down from the living area. It has its own bathroom adjacent to the purpose built utility room. The other building comprises two large airy double rooms, one a double en suite, the other a twin bed room which has a bathroom across the passage. A travel cot or a folding bed are available for use in the twin bedroom. This layout makes Pefko Spiti ideal for a family group. The house is simply and comfortably furnished in a rural Anglo/Greek style. There is a traditional Bar-b-que outside the kitchen, gas hob and cooker. An ideal location for those seeking a relaxed and peaceful escape from everyday life, only a 15 minute drive to various beaches and tavernas. Amenities: Gas hob and cooker Fridge freezer Traditional BBQ Hairdryer Selection of books and board games Washing machine (usage on request due to power consumption during less predictable weather or due to water economy during the dry season) Linen, bath and beach towels Travel cot or folding bed. The location: Spiti Pefko is about 1 mile from the old venetian village of Volimes, in the rural mountainous north of the island, surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and good walks on your doorstep. The wild flowers, butterflies and birds abound depending on season and the fresher mountain air is a welcome attribute in the warmer months. Volimes is a large village that remains undeveloped retaining much of its’ traditional Greek architecture and charm. There are a few tavernas and cafes and an excellent baker. The house stands at the head of a valley leading down to the Ionian sea separating Zakynthos from Kephalonia. The port of Agios Nikolaos is about 9km from the house and is home to numerous tavernas, a shop for basic provisions and petrol station. You can also pick up a ferry to Kephalonia from here if you fancy exploring more islands although with so much on your doorstep the intrepid explorer will have plenty to keep themselves busy. In addition to the recognised nearby swimming beaches of Xigia, Makris Gialos and Agios Nikolaos with their crystal clear waters, there are numerous smaller and more private beaches available to the adventurous. The best for the children is the sandy beach at Alykes with its gloriously warm and shallow waters, about 45 minutes drive from the house. There is a reasonable supermarket and nearest cash machine. This end of the island is still very much a cash economy. To make the most of the house and island a car is a must and we thoroughly recommend hiring a boat to continue your adventures from the sea. The northern end of the island is home to the world famous ship wreck, blue caves and numerous coves only accessible by boat. The Peligoni club is about 15minutes drive. Trips to the mainland are easy from the main port in Zakynthos (Zante) town. The town ‘s museum also holds a collection of some wonderful icons. More

About the neighbourhood
The key thing about our location is its rurality, height, peace and quiet apart from chickens and sheep bells. It is a blissful escape from our cyber world, a nature lover's paradise with cool breezes coming up the valley in summer while you sit with your book or a drink. There is reasonable phone signal, but variable, 3/4g in some corners of the house, wifi is now available in most tavernas. There are many walks on your doorstep. The area is a good training ground for the big cross country challenges i.e. running, cycling. The eco-style living requires a little adjustment for some but is all part of the slowing down process and the sense of adventure and self sufficiency is liberating.
Getting around
Car is your most convenient way of getting around, to beaches, tavernas and sites such as days out on the mainland or other Ionian islands. But keen walkers have backpacked, bused and ferried surprising distances. Cyclists in training enjoy the mountainous challenge, bring your own, and mopeds can be hired down at the local port. You can taxi to the house but shopping for food does need motorised wheels. Zakynthos is a wonderful base from which to explore other Ionian islands and the Peloponnese.
