Dragon Cottage is a traditional ex-miners cottage situated in the heart of Blaenavon which was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000. It is situated on the edge of the Brecon Beacons and is an excellent base for touring the area. The cottage has been renovated but maintains its character with beams and stonework. Parking is usually available on the road outside or very nearby the property, there is a verge and small car park opposite. All amenities of the town are accessible by foot. The cottage is managed by a local business as the cottage is a holiday home to us too! Blaenavon is a typical ex-mining town and is recognised as ‘the gateway to the South Wales Valleys’ , 5 miles from Abergavenny, 27 miles from Cardiff and 30 miles from the Severn Bridge which is now toll free. ...Dragon Cottage is a traditional ex-miners cottage situated in the heart of Blaenavon which was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2000. Blaenavon is a typical ex-mining town and is recognised as ‘the gateway to the South Wales Valleys’ , 5 miles from Abergavenny, 27 miles from Cardiff and 30 miles from the Severn Bridge which is now toll free. The old Victorian main street has a variety of shops, our favourite being the Blaenavon Cheddar Company. There are also Coffee shops and an excellent choice of take-aways. A selection of convenience stores including a Co-op are within a very short walking distance. The popular Butterflies Kitchen and Bar is a few steps up the road and the well-rated Lion Hotel is a short walk away where you can enjoy a drink or pub snack in the bar or a meal in the restaurant. Blaenavon hosts many historical gems such as the Big Pit experience, the Ironworks and Workman’s Hall interactive museum which holds archives should you wish to trace your family history! Other attractions such as the Heritage Steam Railway and the Rhymney Brewery Visitor Centre are within a couple of miles. Situated on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, wonderful scenery is on the doorstep including the Tumble, Keepers Pond and Garn Lakes. The area is excellent for walking and cycling and the Brecon & Monmouthshire Canal provides further opportunities at many access points nearby. The Goytre Wharf (as seen on Prunella Scales and Timothy West’s television series ‘Great Canal Journeys’) is about a 6 mile car journey and here you can hire a canal boat, a bicycle or walk along the canal footpath. There is also an excellent café and the Goose & Cuckoo pub also featured on the series, is a couple of miles away. There are really endless opportunities whatever the weather, so a visit to the local World Heritage Tourist Information Centre which houses an exhibition and café is recommended as a first stop! The guest guide folder will also give you ideas of places which have been tried and enjoyed - you will not be bored! We would welcome you to stay in our little cottage – Polly & Simon More
