Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands
Step back in time to the days of the olde Caribbean! This kitchen cottage is securely nestled in a tropical garden behind a well-known townhouse called Casa Santa Anna, located in Charlotte Amalie's historic district. This grand home was built around 1825 for a wealthy merchant and later, in 1851 was owned by General Santa Anna of Texas's Alamo fame. It was also owned by Vilbrun Guillaume 'Simon' Sam, a President of Haiti in the late 1800's. After the town was burnt to the ground (six times!) some homeowner's built kitchens apart from the home. Today, few kitchen cottages remain intact in the Caribbean.
The cottage still has the massive, original cooking hood (the flue is still open and is lined with amazing brickwork). The ceiling line still has the original exposed beams and rafters. The floor has the original...

About the neighbourhood
My home is a stately town house that was built around 1825 in the European Colonial Caribbean style of the day. It has the original shuttered window openings that do not have glass windows. Almost all of the neighboring homes were built around that same (1775-1850) time period. The cottage is situated behind the house in the enclosed garden courtyard. The house is in the quant harbor town of Charlotte Amalie, named after a Danish Queen from the 1700's. Main Street, which is only two blocks from the house, is our main shopping district where passengers on cruise ships go shopping all year round looking for duty free bargains. There are literally hundreds of jewelry stores on St.Thomas. There are also many historic places close to the cottage, like the old Pavillion at Market Square whi... more
