Modern family Beach house 5 stars
Awesome modern family beach house with all that you need. ( bar fridge and outstanding kitchen with a outdoor B.B. Q ) Walking distance to shops and two restaurants. 3 canoes, 1 SUP, 2 bikes, golf clubs all provided. Nothing was ever any trouble for the very nice Anita who helped us settle in. Anita only lived a few kms away but gave us great tips with restaurants, supermarkets and generally just great advice on things to do in the Cook Islands. Our whole family loved this house and is highly recommended right on the beach with magnificent sunsets and great snorkeling.

Lovely but smelly
With mixed feelings, we are writing a review on Pae Moana. After spending $7000 on 9 nights there, we thought that we had to be honest about our stay so others could make an informed decision before selecting this holiday home. Basically there are good and bad aspects. Pae Moana is a true home away from home. Very well furnished, with everything you could possibly need including a huge range of linen. Extremely well maintained, clean house as well as grounds. Anita is wonderful, very service oriented and went out of her way to make us feel welcome. Even showed the children how to open a coconut. The only minor criticism is that there are only 2 kayaks not 3 as stated on their website which became a point of contention when our 3 children wanted their own kayak. From a location point of view, it is well situated on the island with easy walking to shops, bars and Rarotongan Resort. Snorkelling is good, however, its location between two local properties is less than desirable. It was very difficult to enjoy our time outside, including being on the beach, as almost daily, we would be smoked out by one or sometimes both of the neighbours burning rubbish right on the boundary of the property. This was not just leaves they were burning but also plastic and general house waste which caused a very noxious black smoke which brought on my asthma symptoms which I have not had for a long time. Not ideal when you have young children with developing lungs. These fires would burn almost non-stop due to the type of hard wood they used to maintain the firepit. Burning of fires appears to be common practice on the island and so is not isolated to Pae Moana only. It was however compounded being in close proximity to the neighbours. We also had to contend with the smell of raw sewage from the house on the right hand side (facing the sea). We initially thought it was a poor drainage system for Pae Moana but later found out that the neighbour was illegally living in the house as it had no septic tank. This got worse with the heat of the day. I can only imagine where the sewage is landing up; likely in the ocean where we were swimming (there is a wide issue of seepage into the lagoons due to these types of properties). Tepua did say that she will be addressing the issues with the local authorities, but until they do something about it, the smell is there to stay. The final issue is the amount of glass on the beach and in the ocean. Children walking barefoot was impossible for fear of them getting a serious cut. Due to the cost of rubbish collections, it appears that local practice is either to burn or bury rubbish. My husband spent over 45 minutes collecting large bags of broken glass that had been buried on the beach just in front of the house and exposed by a storm the night before, strewing the glass everywhere. The neighbour’s child came to see what my husband was doing, and then a while later the grandmother came out with a bucket and spade to retrieve the balance of the glass we couldn’t unearth without a spade. I can’t say with certainty who buried the glass, but there were over 20 bottles. Broken glass is not isolated to this beach only; it is everywhere. Raro needs to clean up their act if they want repeat visits from tourists. Although we loved Pae Moana, unless it is up uplifted and put into a different location, we won’t be back. Nor will we be back in Rarotonga which is very sad, as it is not the clean Rarotonga we first visited 10 years ago. Not when there are so many other destination options available to travellers these days.

Kia orana Thank you for the feedback of your stay at Pae Moana. As I have mentioned to you in reply to your email to you that it is always our incentive to make sure that our guests are comfortable with their stay at Pae Moana. We do normally have 3 kayaks at the property but unfortunately one was damaged by previous guests and was being repaired at the time of your stay. There is definitely 3 kayaks there now. The glass problem has never been to that extent over the last 4 years as you've pointed out. Unfortunately, the glass problem has extends to at least 500m north along our beautiful beach - the sections along this area of coast use to extend out at least 10m towards the lagoon and the rubbish holes were often in that area as it's the back of the house. As erosion has moved the usable land boundary further towards the road, I suspect that these old rubbish holes are being scoured out and glass and other inorganic refuse is being carried onto the beach during rough seas. Most of the glass that ends up on the beach is from large brown bottles which indicates the age of the bottles as no one drinks from these bottles anymore and haven't done for many years. It is an issue that the government/Environmental agencies need to address as soon as possible. It is unfortunate that your group of 7 experienced this during your stay. We also hope that you enjoyed the complimentary bottle of wine, dozen beer, fruit bowl, tea/coffee/sugar, milk, juice and lastly the $100 Tamarind House Meal Voucher as a gift in celebration of your birthday with your sister. We sincerely hope that you will visit us again.

Perfect place for a family holiday
Perfect location and probably the best set up holiday house I have stayed at, it had almost everything you could ask for. Right on the beach and having stayed a 3 other places during our 3 weeks, the sunset side was our favourite as it was protected from the winds ( I found Muri beach a little cool in September). We stayed as a family of 5 but hosted 2 dinners for the rest of the family group ( 13 in total) without an issue. Favourite features: 2 kayaks and an SUP ( the SUP was extremely easy to use) Location, stunning sunset every day. there is also a bar 3 doors up to grab a cocktail and simple meal. Hammock by the ocean to lie an watch the waves, beautiful blue water and occasional whale playing. Fully set up kitchen ( we cooked on several nights, shop was quick walk away and the kids loved the house so much we were all happy to stay in). THE BEAUTIFUL 3 LEGGED DOG: Ruby/Tripod. she visited several times a day and slept on the back deck. The kids ( and I) just loved her. There are dogs everywhere on the island and they were all such nice natured. If we could have taken one home we would have in a flash. Only issue we had was no hanging space and limited space in the kids room ( although there were sufficient drawers), as we were on a 3 week trip ( including our wedding) we had more luggage than most. perhaps a coat rack in the main rather than the chair or some fold up suitcase racks??

Great Family Friendly Beachfront house
We just returned form a week at Pae Moana and had a fabulous time. We are a family of 4 (kids 11 and 13), whether you want to chill and read in the beachfront hammock, swim or snorkel a few steps from the house, or paddle a kayak or paddleboard the choice is yours. The house location is a really good part of the reef and you can swim/snorkel no matter if high or low tide. Whilst the snorkeling is good in front of the house we have found that the snorkellng is at its best a bit further south down the beach at the Rarotongan Beach Resort. Its a really easy and beautiful walk along the beach to get there (The resort itself is awful but it's snorkeiing is amazing. Pae Moana well caters for all eventualities, A TV and DVD's for a rainy day or a chillaxing evening, Bluetooth sound system, Board games etc. The kitchen is particularly well appointed and equipped, there's everything you need to cater for your holiday. The supermarket in town is well stock with all familiar brands so self catering is really easy. Not forgetting the fresh fish shop...OMG the most amazing selection of game fish and really well priced. We would really recommend Pae Moana for anyone looking for a family friendly home away from home slap bang on the most beautiful white sandy beach and turquoise water. We will be back!

Best Holiday for years
The holiday home is about 10 kms from town on the sunset side of Raro. The house has everything you could need for a great relaxing stay. Canoes, stand up paddle board, loads of snorkelling gear, and push bikes. I will not go back to a resort after this staying at this place. you get to meet the friendly locals and see what they do like night diving and spearing fish, the 3 legged dog that catches fish and loads more!! We will be back!!!

Everything was thought of.
We had a truly wonderful time at this place (we being three couples, and twins toddlers)- the house, gardens and location totally lived up to our expectations, plus more! We really appreciated all the extra things that were there when we arrived, before we had a chance to go grocery shopping. And the kids were thought of too, with a little soft toy waiting for them in their cots- it made a big difference settling them in. And Anita was just perfect as the manager too. When we can get back to Rarotonga, we will definitely look at Pae Moana as our first choice of place to stay.

Pae Moana - Beautiful
We landed in Rarotonga pretty excited about our 6 day escape to the heat. Pae Moana is the cleanest and most well run holiday house you'll find. The complimentary car was great for exploring and the house has been very well thought out. The beach is like a postcard, really. The house manager, Anita, was warm and friendly and obviously took great pride in keeping Pae Moana looking it's very best. We WILL rent Pae Moana again.

Pae Moana Revisited
This was our second visit to Pae Moana and was every bit as enjoyable as our first stay there 2 years ago. The plantings and palm trees that frame the property were freshly planted during our first visit, so it was great to see them looking so lush and tropical when we arrived. We made an effort to do different activities this trip, including a game of golf; we've never played on a course with so many shared fairways but it was most enjoyable, as there aren't too many courses that have have such spectacular views from the tee boxes. Our night at the Beats on Betela was a fun time, lovely to hear the music of the island as well as our very own Tiki Taane. We tried a few new restaurants, Coco Putt, Vaiamas, Bamboo Jacks, as well as the usual visit to Trader Jacks and Tamarind House, always a great meal and night out. The Shipwreck Bar, which is only a few doors down from Pae Moana was a great little find and highly recommended for meeting up with friends for a beer or cocktail and enjoying the stunning sunset and view at the end of the day. We loved our stay at Pae Moana and recommend it to everyone wanting a relaxing or as busy as you want to be, holiday escape from the chills of the NZ winter.
