First class accomodation and activities
We enjoyed a wonderful 7 days. We have stayed on two previous occasions. These stays were equally enjoyable. Beautiful, tasteful decoration accompanies modern facilities in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry. Very spacious living and dining areas. The beds were first class. We opted for chef Phil Sparrow to prepare some exquisite meals using local produce. The local hotel also provides excellent meals. Activities that we undertook were golf on premier local courses, trout fishing in 3 local rivers. The guide we used was outstanding identifying many medium size and large fish. We also explored local towns of Queenstown, invercargill and Te Anau. Each had a wide variety of interesting attractions. What a great property in a truly beautiful country.

Oreti River House - a charming peaceful house with delightful garden.
Oreti River House is located in the small village of Lumsden away from the hordes of tourists and on the doorstep of the Around the Mountain Bike Trail and near the new Lake2Lake bike trail. Fishermen/women would love it here as the fishing is reputed to be superb. The house has been delightfully renovated with an art deco feel, offers excellent tourist books on fishing and tourist activities. The house is very well provisioned and carefully maintained by the owner and housekeeper and meticulously clean. The large garden surrounding the house has beautiful native plants and trees attracting native birds and is a pleasure to sit out in. It is the just the sort of place where you can truly relax and chill out.

A wonderful home with every comfort and amenity.
This was our second visit and we are already planning a return visit later this year. The home is beautifully restored with very comfortable beds, good furniture and modern appliances and very efficient air conditioning. The home is located within walking distance of local eateries, supermarket and great rivers for fly fishing.

Delightful peaceful renovated house with beautiful native garden
Situated in Lumsden, this house is perfect for cyclists/walkers with the new Around the Mountain Trail cycle track on its doorstep and of course if you are a fisherman/woman the house is jam packed with brochures and booklets with advice for fishing on the Oreti River. The private garden is exceedingly spacious planted out with native plants and is delightful to relax in with a BBQ and an ingenious fireplace. The house has been sympathetically restored and renovated and was clean and tidy with lots of thought given to what holidaymakers might actually need. With shops, cafes etc just a few minutes walk away you don't really need your car. Lumsden is also part of the Heritage Trail so lots to see and do if you want to drag yourself from chilling in the garden plus places like the Mavora Lakes, Lake Hauroko with walking trails were on the agenda. It truly is a lovely place to relax and wind down. Thank you to our hosts and house manager.

Comfortable quiet country house
We had a lovely stay at Oreti House. It is well situated in the pretty little town of Lumsden which has basic shops and a couple of cafes. The house is extremely well appointed with comfortable beds, and lounges, a well equipped kitchen and BBQ. Sun or air con warmed. An amazingly big and well cared for garden, good for croquet and boules as well as evenings by the fire pit. We had a thoroughly lovely time.

Trout fishermans home away from home
We were a group of 4 adults staying at Oreti River House for the purpose of trout fishing in the area. The house was immaculate with very superior fixtures, fittings and furnishings. The location was also close enough for a day trip to Invercargill and Gore where there are plenty of things to do and see. Would highly recommend and we will stay there again.

Wonderful House with Magnificent Gardens
My wife and I stayed at Oreti River House on our latest visit to the South Island of New Zealand. We had many adventures touring the local region and fishing the local rivers and streams for brown and ocean trout. The house provided a perfect base to return to each evening. The beds are very comfortable, the gas fireplace warms the entire house and the accommodation and fixtures are of the highest standard. The surrounding garden is magnificent and highlights the owners commitment to making Oreti House a true 5 star property. We are already looking forward to returning to Oreti River House some time in the not too distant future.

Wonderful accommodation, clean, tidy, beautiful grounds and a lovely country feeling but within close driving to a great
Enjoyed the accommodation, neat and tidy and grounds gorgeous and well maintained. Conveniently located to all forms of recreational activities. Quality golf courses nearby and fishing also a must. The owners obviously take a great deal of pride in Oreti House and are very concerned to ensure that the accommodation is first class with all the usual facilities. The added bonus is proximity to Queenstown with all of its attractions and the airport. In all would have no hesitation in recommending Oreti House to anyone seeking clean and comfortable accommodation with all the extras.

About the neighbourhood
The region's most popular tourist activity is fishing for large wild brown trout. With a strong fishing rod and NZ fishing license an angler can easily access waterways. Some waters are crystal clear and suitable for careful sight fishing and stalking while other rivers are fast flowing and can be fished with multiple casts over promising water. Some rivers have smaller populations of very large trout while others have larger populations of medium sized fish. In fact there is water suitable to test every fly fishing skill level. Many trout fishing guides operate in the local area and are very helpful with local information and advice. See www.oretiriverhouse.co.nz for more information about fly fishing for trout in the Lumsden area. Lumsden forms part of the spectacular new cycle touring trail called the Around The Mountains Cycle Trail. This is a mountain bike and cycle trail that traverses over 172 km through towering mountains, forests, farms across rivers and past lakes. The trail starts from Queenstown with a ferry trip across Lake Wakatipu. Cyclists then ride to Walter Peak, Mavora Lakes, Mossburn, Lumsden and Kingston. The trail opened in October 2014 and promises to be one on New Zealand's most popular and scenic cycle tracks. Oreti River House offers very comfortable accommodation to cyclists seeking to sample one leg of the trail over a weekend. Two circuits are possible from Lumsden. The first is to Mossburn. This circuit involves crossing the Oreti River then passing farmland with a majestic mountain backdrop, lunching at Mossburn before returning to Lumsden. This trip is a very pleasant 40km return which should take some 3- 4 hours to complete. The other circuit travels north to Five Rivers. This pleasant 28 km round trip passes along the banks of the Oreti River before stopping at Five Rivers for lunch. The round trip back to Lumsden will take about 3-4 hours. The Around The Mountains Cycle Trail is also open to walking parties who will also appreciate the spectacular scenery and safe off-road pathway. Many sections of the Around the Mountains Trail follow old steam train easements offering gentle grades and curves away from busy roads. Other suggested activities include jet boating on Lake Manapouri, enjoying the Milford Track guided day walk or visiting the Glow Worm Caves from Te Anau, seeing a real tuatara in the Southland Museum and Art Gallery in Invercargill (a fascinating and rare reptile dating from before the dinosaur age), having a fabulous day out on FishJet on the Waiau River, visiting the Croydon Aviation Heritage Museum at Mandeville and seeing the bottle house at Waikaia. One of the most popular and simplest activities offered in Lumsden is walking along the edges of the Oreti River which passes near Lumsden - about a 10-15 minute walk away. As a river on a glacial stream-bed, it winds and braids through wide open areas of colourful pebbles- its aqua blue waters home to rising trout, dipping swallows, timid ducks and geese. It is home to small populations of the Black Billed Gull-the only endangered gull species in the world. Flocks of this shy bird can often be seen flying over Oreti River House.
Getting around
The South Island of New Zealand is best accessed by using a vehicle. Many roads are suitable to large camping vehicles but 4WD is necessary to reach remote rivers and tracks. It is possible to cycle around the main towns and use the services of a transport company to deliver your luggage from one accommodation to another.

How to get there
Oreti River House is located in the country town of Lumsden on the South Island of New Zealand. Lumsden is a short drive ( less than 1 hour) from two Airports- Queenstown and Invercargill. Both Airports have International and Domestic flights and an extensive range of vehicle hire services. The drive from Queenstown to Lumsden is especially picturesque as it travels along the edges of Lake Wakatipu before continuing through wide, green glacial plains spotted with sheep and deer, surrounded by towering mountains. The trip will cross the upper Mataura River which will give your first view of this 'gin clear' waterway. Its upper section shows regular pools, ripples and water flowing over colourful glacial pebbles. Nearer to Lumsden you will travel along the edges of the middle section of the Oreti River- showing its braided river bed, deep pools, shadowy undercuts and long ripples. The route will pass long sections of the newly opened Around The Mountains Cycle Trail which winds through valleys near the road. The drive will show many aspects of the magnificent scenery that makes up this beautiful part of New Zealand.
