She will organise keys and is available to answer any questions about how to use appliances or about the town and region. The house is only rented to one party whether the booking needs 1 bedroom or all 4. Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.
If you have submitted a review for a holiday rental property, we may also ask that you provide us with proof of your stay to ensure that your review is attached to the correct rental property.

Well equipped, comfortable, roomy and clean house
There were 6 of us adults at Rod and Wheel and we felt completely at home. Place was spotless and had everything you needed. Lovely wood burner and stacks of hot water for us all. Nearby was good local pub with super fish and chips and great steak. It might not look amazing from outside but did us proud for a birthday celebration. Sorry to have not met owners to say all this but we had to leave early to catch plane. Mark, Debbie and family

Dear Mark and Debbie, Thank-you for your kind review. We appreciate the time and effort it takes to create your report. Happy to hear the local pub was a happy birthday venue. We also enjoy the fish and chips and ribs they so nicely serve. You are all most welcome guests so we hope to see you back again sometime in the future, regards Marina and Roger Lindsay ( PS have replied to your review earlier however it seems to have slipped the TripAdvisor posting system)

A warm and comforable house that makes you feel at home
My wife and I stayed at the Rod and Wheel House in January 2014 for one week. The house is newly renovated with a marvelous ambience. It has four well appointed bedrooms, an open plan kitchen, dining and living room with a pot belly stove which keeps the house wonderfully warm at night. This delivers a relaxing atmosphere, which goes well with a bottle of NZ Pinot Noir - just what we like after a day's fishing! The excellent sound system, large screen TV and free Wi-Fi all add to the comforts of home. This was our third trip back to Lumsden and equal to the best to date. We did some excellent fly fishing in the local rivers over most of the week - it is true trout heaven, with the many creeks and rivers full of magnificent trout. My wife caught a 2 pound and then a 3 pound trout which added to the wonderful memories. We would highly recommend Rod and Wheel House as offering superb value for money. We definitely plan to return back to Rod and Wheel House in the not to distant future. Richard and Heather Phillips

Thank-you for your very kind review. We receive many complimentary comments from our guests about our very comfortable house. We have tried very hard to fill it with high quality beds and linen, top range kitchen items and plush furniture. We know the trout fishing is fantastic and hope to see you back again soon to tackle the 3-4 pounders in the Mataura followed by the 6-8 pounders in the upper Oreti!

Map
About the neighbourhood
Lumsden is a small country town set within sheep, dairy and deer farms. It sits on the banks of the beautiful Oreti River and is surrounded by mountains. It has a primary and a secondary school, a modern supermarket, a number of cafés and restaurants, pharmacy, post office, pub, dairy, liquor shop, petrol station, library and medical center. Rod and Wheel House is positioned in its own private garden surrounded by hedges. However it is also only a short walk from shops, restaurants and town services. The Oreti River travels for over 171kms and slowly curves its way through the open plains of the lower South Island. Its middle sections pass right next to Lumsden and it is possible to walk to the river from Rod and Wheel House. Southland is one of the strongholds for brown trout fishing in New Zealand. Brown trout averaging around 5 – 6 pounds and double digit fish are common but challenging to catch. Both the size and numbers of brown trout in the upper Oreti make it exceptional on a national basis. In particular, the average size of brown trout, at just over 6 lbs, is over 10% greater than in ten other highly valued South Island headwater fisheries. The numbers of large trout now being recorded, at some 48 per kilometer, make the Oreti headwaters one of the most productive trout fisheries nationally. Southland is also home to flocks of gulls, ducks and other water birds. The Oreti River has been identified as an Important Bird Area because for much of its length it supports breeding colonies of the only endangered gull in the world - Black-billed Gulls. Breeding flocks of these birds frequent the banks and islands of the Oreti River- one of their last refuges in New Zealand. Pairs of paradise-duck are also common. The paradise shelduck is a semi-terrestrial waterfowl that has goose-like features. They are commonly observed flying in pairs or grazing on pasture. They are very vocal birds, with males giving a characteristic zonk zonk while females make a more shrill zeek zeek while flying or as a warning to intruders. The river also frequently attracts flocks of migratory swallows who feast on the mayfly hatches. Walking along the banks of the Oreti River looking at the birds, colorful pebbles and sparkling blue water is a very pleasurable experience enjoyed by both tourists and residents.
Getting around
It is best to travel in Southland by a car/hired vehicle. Many of the most scenic spots are off the main roads and difficult to enjoy by public transport. A public bus can get you to Lumsden but your touring options are very limited unless you have a vehicle. The Oreti River is a short walk from the house and the local shops are only a 5 minute walk away but other fantastic places are a 10, 20, 30 or 40 minute drive away.

How to get there
Rod and Wheel House is located in the country town of Lumsden on the lower part of the South Island of New Zealand. Lumsden is a short drive ( less than 1 hour) from two international Airports- Queenstown and Invercargill. The drive to Lumsden is scenic and fairly straightforward. In particular the drive from Queenstown is especially picturesque as it travels along the edges of Lake Wakatipu before continuing through wide, green glacial plains spotted with sheep and deer, surrounded by towering mountains. The trip will cross the upper Mataura River which will give your first view of this gin clear waterway. Nearer to Lumsden you will travel along the edges of the middle section of the Oreti River- showing its braided river bed, deep pools, shadowy undercuts and long ripples. The drive will also parallel some of the sections of the Around The Mountains Cycle Trail which winds through the nearby countryside. The route will show many aspects of the magnificent scenery that makes up this beautiful part of New Zealand.
