“Paradise”
Reviewed 5 November 2015 for a stay in August 2015

Hale Koaniani is a single-level home on concrete stilts situated on the north shore of Kauai, just west of Hanalei, and just east of Tunnels Beach. The luxury house is meticulously well maintained, and has luxury appointments that are on par with the best luxury houses. Although it is certainly not cheap, the price reflects a good value for this vacation rental. Curiously, it does not have air conditioning; at the same time, if you do not have the windows open on this place, you are missing the point entirely of renting a beach house. We stayed mid-August, and there were several nights that were sweltering. We got by with cold showers before bed and laying very still. There was only one fan, but everyone wished they had one for each of the three bedrooms. One of the features that I liked were the windows and blinds. The blinds were wood slats that covered a screened area, allowing maximum breeze with a little privacy. When it would rain (which was frequent, but pleasant), you close the blind if there was enough wind to drive the rain in through the window.

The surroundings of this home make this a truly unique experience. We spent much time on the lanai facing the water, and some facing the emerald-green mountains. We visited as a family: me, my wife (both 43 years old), and our three children (a girl and two boys, 13, 12, and 10 years old respectively). This is our second time in two years visiting Kauai because of its sheer beauty, and we had a more active schedule the last time we stayed (Princeville). The last vacation included the Southern Star luxury catamaran (highly recommended), Kipu Sky Ranch ATV tours, and the plantation irrigation system inner-tube ride. However, this time it was all about relaxation. Each day we would wander (15 min. drive) into Hanalei for something to eat and get coffee (which is some of the best in the world), and then spend hours in the water. We left a couple of times for Kapaa, once for Smith’s family luau (our second time going, and a lovely luau that is at a good price).

The ocean can be seen about 60-70 yards out back from the house. There is a tall reef protruding out of the water where you enter the beech from the property. It is interesting, especially with tide pool minnows and crabs, but it has powerful currents that make swimming or snorkeling difficult. If you go to the beach and walk west (to the left in the pictures) about 100 yards, there is a beautiful swimming and snorkeling beech. Currents are still strong there, but manageable for intermediate snorkelers. We were able to walk by several rare Hawaiian monk seals that molt on the beech for extended periods. Many colorful fish can be seen, as well as urchins, sea cucumbers, and the occasional Moray eel. Tunnels Beech is even better, and only a short drive west down the road. Parking can be difficult at this beech, as it is very limited.

If you stay at Hale Koaniani, and you want to experience snorkeling or scuba diving at the tunnels, I suggest going early in the day or having someone drop a snorkeling party off for an interval of time if you are going with equipment. To find the almost hidden drive to the snorkeling part of the beech, look to the right as you head west and find the rows of cars on a small dirt road about 100 yards from the entrance of the main parking area (about 100 yards before your car has to cross a river). Most other roads that are not for public use are marked “not tunnels”. It is here that you will find what any adventuresome snorkeler is looking for. Many sea turtles feed here, and don’t seem to mind the passive snorkeler observing nearby, and a wide of variation of coral topography and ocean life.

Overall the stay was memorable because of the intense-lush environment that surrounds you in the rainy part of the island. A natural beauty unsurpassed by the Caribbean, or the other Hawaiian islands for that matter. The vacation was made perfect with a luxurious house that seems natural in its surroundings in a quiet neighborhood.

Many guests love it here and return over again with their families.
The location is the biggest response we have-close to the beautiful Na Pali Coast-but only a short drive from Hanalei town.

We hope that we will see you again on a return trip-just let us know when-we will be happy to have you as our guests once more.
