I picked this hotel after reading the reviews of others on here, but must say that although I did not expect the Ritz (it is after all only a 2 star hotel) I was a little bit disappointed.
The hotel is easy enough to find, right on the main roundabout into town, and there was parking in front of the hotel. When making the reservation I had enquired about secure parking, and this had been noted, but we did not need it in the end, although it was offered. The old lady that reviewer Bob J spoke of was there at the door, and we received a friendly hello from her. Check-in was smooth and friendly, the key was handed over together with a remote for the TV as well as for the Air-Con. We were on what they called the 2nd floor, which in effect is the first floor (they called the ground floor the first floor for some reason), and our room was right at the end. There is a lift, but taking the stairs is just as quick. Let me start with the "bad" points:
When we got to our room, there was a distinct smell of drains, which seemed to disappear after a while, but returned every time we came back to our room (I suppose we just got used to it while staying in the room for any length of time).
When we opened the built-in wardrobe, there was a very strong smell of mould, suffice to say that we decided not to use the wardrobe. I must mention that the wardrobe was on an outside wall, which might have had something to do with it.
The air-conditioning (which also served as a heating unit) did not work to start with, but this problem seemed to have been resolved the next day, after the cleaning staff had been (without us mentioning the problem to reception). It still did not heat the room however (which was needed as unfortunately the weather was not too great). We expect the unit might need a service and gassing up.
The bathroom was functional, drawback being that the toilet kept running every time after you flushed it. The push button for flushing also did not fit the cistern properly and was loose. As my husband is a plumber, he fixed it.
The hot water supply was good, instant hot water when wanted, but it needs venting somewhere, as every so often, when the water was pumped round, there was a whistling noise.
The patio doors did not close very easily, and were left ajar by cleaning staff after the clean.
The hotel bar seems to be open only during the opening hours of the restaurant, which we found a little bit strange. On our last night we decided to have dinner at the restaurant, and would have loved to have had a drink in the bar during the afternoon, but found the bar to be closed (about 18.30). The restaurant also does not open for dinner until 20.30, which even by Spanish standards seems a bit late for a hotel restaurant. I will review the restaurant separately.
Perhaps we should have mentioned these things during our stay, but as we were only there for 2 nights, we decided it was not worth complaining, or trying to get another room. After all, you are really only there to sleep.
Now for the good points:
The hotel is very conveniently situated, right at the entrance to town, and only about 150 mtrs. from the beach, and about 750 mtrs. from the main shopping street, Calle Ancha.
The hotel staff is very friendly.
Breakfast is perfectly adequate for a 2 star hotel, there was freshly squeezed orange juice, iced water, coffee, milk and tea. Spanish ham, cheese and mortadella to put on your sandwich, olive oil and tomato for the authentic Spanish breakfast, fruit, 2 types of cereals (coco pops and rice puffs I believe, perhaps "normal" cornflakes would have been better for the adult choice). Small pastries, and normal bread for toasting, both white and brown bread.
I was surprised however that although the breakfast room opened at 8.00 o'clock, there was no other staff then the night porter/ receptionist on our day of departure. Considering that we had not been asked for credit card details when making the reservation, we could very easily have walked out without paying, and perhaps less honest people would have done so. Having worked as a hotel receptionist myself, I was a little bit surprised at this.
All in all, the hotel is adequate for a quick getaway, but can do with a few improvements.

Dear PeterM123,

First of all, we would like to thank you for taking your time sharing your experience at our hotel with us. Every feedback we receive is of a great value in order to know our guest´s opinions, improve our quality standards and taking actions, if so required.

I apologize for the inconvenience caused by the room. At this time we are readying the hotel for high season. If you had informed about it at the reception-desk, we would have changed rooms or we would have solved these problems.

Regarding schedules, the restaurant is open from 13.30 to 16.00 and from 20.30 to 23.00, which are broader than those indicated by the Spanish Legislation for Hotels schedules. The Bar-Café, is open from 8.30 to 23.30, so sorry that they thought it was closed.

I again apologize for these inconveniences, and also appreciate the positive part that you value us. If they return to Punta Umbria, we would be delighted to have you staying back and spend a better stay with us.

Best Regards,
Juan Carlos Ledesma (General Manager)

Just spent 3 days at this hotel. Much better than an average 2 star. High standard decor and quality linen etc in well kept rooms.Great air con. Staff extremeley friendly and helpful staff, Jose speaks english.. Great location, in walking distance of both beaches and busy town strip.(lots of fish restaurants and bars). Would have loved a swimming pool.

Room Tip: 223 has large balcony with sun in the afternoon.

Stayed at the Ayamontino for 3 nights. The hotel kind of picked itself for us from the Viola Points program and the positive reviews it had received.

We found the hotel to be excellent for a short beach stay trip. The staff were very friendly once you had got past the the hard stare of the old lady that we assumed to be head of the family owners of the hotel.

The hotel was very clean throughout and had a nice feeling. The room was adequate, very clean and tidy and had a small balcony. The bathroom functioned well and was also very clean.

A typical local breakfast was included and this was more than enough to start your day on.

WiFi was included but we did not use.

There are a few hotel reserved car parking places in front of the hotel.

The location of the hotel is mid-way between the beach and the main shopping/going out street of Punta Umbria. Less than 5 mins to both.

All in all a two star hotel, that has a better vibe and standards than many hotels who rate themselves as 3 or 4 star.

Room Tip: Some rooms on the third (top floor) have small balconies.
