Usually vacation every year in Jamaica or Mexico ( Riviera Maya) but with ongoing issues in both areas decided to give Roatan a try this year for its beautiful reef. We love to snorkel and see the fish and coral.

The resort is a mix of old and new, we stayed in the newer rooms at the front of the resort, just steps from the beach. Room was always clean and there was fresh beautiful towel art each day.

Food is not fancy (it's not a 5 star) but there was always something for everyone to eat - breakfast - beach snack bar, fried chicken, donuts ( yummy) and buffet for dinner.
On the one day it stormed they even moved the snacks inside!

There was always a chaise for sitting in the sun, split our time between the pool and beach - watched the sun go down every night.

Staff were always helpful and pleasant, breakfast server, Yessica went out of her way to get my wife a drink of honey and lemon for a cold that came on during our holiday. It helped tremendously.

Biggest resort let down was the drinks - we associate Caribbean holidays with tropical drinks by the pool or beach. Drink selection is very limited - no blender type drinks using fruit, pina colada is an ice machine mix -- and then all are served in waxed Pepsi cups.

The beach itself is very busy and commercial with vendors and boats - not much thought for the health of the beach or reef.

Good prep thing to do would be to get a ball cap or T-shirt with NO THANKS printed on it, so you didn't have to repeat over and over and over as you walk down the beach.

Would we go again--- maybe!

Room Tip: Front area is noisy at night from shows in main building and one beach.

We got married at the Henry Morgan this March!
After I booked this resort I was a little worried after reading all of the reviews. I will do my best to review everything. We travelled with a group of 26 people with some children ranging in ages of 2-14.
Once we landed we were through customs within an hour. We were immediately greeted by Phillipe an Air Transat Rep, he was friendly and super helpful. He showed as right away where to go and there was two vans there waiting to take us to our hotel. The ride to the hotel was about 20 mins, our driver was wonderful and explained everything we drove by. We arrived at the resort and were greeted with drinks right away. We had to wait about 40 mins for our luggage to arrive as it was brought separately. We arrived at the hotel shortly after 11 am and had to wait for our rooms to be ready. Most of them were ready by 1 some shortly after. During the wait time we had a drink and checked everything out. Wasn’t bad at all.
We had the older rooms (standard) at the back which in my opinion were just fine, we knew the resort was rustic and it was. The bathrooms can use some updating but other then that it was great. The beds were comfy and the hammocks out on the balcony were a wonderful touch, we laid on ours every evening enjoying the nice breeze. The room has a small safe a large dresser and two large closets. Lots of storage! Also two queen beds. The maids were wonderful and made something creative with towels everyday. They provide you with a few bottles of water in your fridge, do not throw these out you have to refill them at the water stations located in the resort. You can also buy huge bottles in the store for $3 if you wish to purchase your own. The walk from your room to resort is short, everything is connected with boardwalks. The coffee servered in the buffet is not good at all. We purchased a coffee card for 20 dollars at the winery they have coffee espresso and cappuccinos that were good! The buffet was good... they people that leave reviews complaining about the food are ridiculous. For breakfast there was always bacon boiled eggs fresh pastries fresh fruit made in front of you pancakes and crepes, as well as an omelette station that you can create yourself and is made in front of you. Lots of other stuff as well.
At lunch time the buffet has tons of options as well but we mostly ate outside at the snack bar. There was always fresh cut fries and fried chicken empanadas and nachos as well as coleslaw. At 3:00 everyday they make hot fresh donuts (amazing)
these girls work very hard! Leave them a tip!
At the snack station there is a bar as well located right beside the pool!
For dinner we never booked the al la cart as we enjoyed the dinner buffet there was a pizza station as well as a past station, different meats , potatoes salad and veggies everyday. There is something for even th pickiest eaters. We had dinner at the hangover hut one night it is owned by Canadians and it was fantastic , we also had dinner one night at the Argentinian grill right next door, we had steak and lobster it is priced well and was great as well. The drink selections here could be better but there is still a good selection of beer vodka rum and for frozen drinks pina colada and strawberry daiquiris they were good. We walked up past Bananarama up the little ally and went to the strip mall, you can buy booze there if you want your own for your room as the bars close early at 11:00 pm. We got rum for $7 a bottle they also sell corona and Smirnoff ice coolers. The best part of this trip for me was the people the island iself and he ocean!! The ocean is calm and beautiful, nice white sand beach with beautiful turquoise water! Our wedding here was beautiful!! The people here are wonderful and super friendly. We did a day excursion and went out to
see dolphins and to snorkeling stops. I have never seen anything like it!! Roatan has the second largest coral reef in the world and it is amazing to see!
There are lots of beach chairs we never went with out one. We took the water taxi into town one day there are amazing gift shops and restaurants all over. You are greeted with $1 beers right away . We toured the chocolate factory which was awesome and ate at the pizzeria also awesome! Everyone is pleasant and it is very safe. We are already planning our anniversary return to Roatan and will be staying at the Henry Morgan again. I highly recommend this place is it rustic yes but it is beautiful and relaxing!!

I read all the reviews on here and most of the negative reviews were way off. The rooms were very spacious and well maintained. If you have an issue they come to take care of it right away. The phones in the room don 't work but it's a short walk to the front desk to get what you need. The AC works great, the bed are firm but comfortable, rooms are cleaned well every day, there is no bath tub but the shower has great pressure and plenty of hot water. We stayed in the older part and the rooms while not modern are great and really how much time do you want to be in the room.
They only give you two small water bottles in your room at the beginning of your stay but you can fill them up in many location around the resort. I would suggest to bring a couple of bigger water bottles and leave them in the fridge so you always have cold water to drink as you can't drink from the tap there. The safe in room has a smaller opening so you can't fit bigger items but we felt safe leaving cameras and things like that in our suit cases.
The food was great and plenty of variety that you don't get bored and can find something you will enjoy.
The staff were amazing!!! Everyone there was more than happy to help with any questions or issues you may have. They go out of there way to be helpful. Probably the nicest staff I have encountered.
The beach is great. there are vendors walking up and down the beach but most just needed a simple no and they would not push. facing out from the hotel towards the water if you turn left and walk maybe 10 mins you will find a great reef to snorkel at, we saw some amazing fish there. if you turn right you can walk all the way to west end which take about an hour walk(Not an easy walk for elderly as there are some rocks to climb but nothing serious).
We felt safe everywhere we went and we like to explore.
The excursions offered in the resort are more than double what you pay outside the resort and if you ask the security people they will point you to people you can trust if you are worried. Barter with them they will give you a better price.
It's not a 5* resort but it is a great 3.5*.

Room Tip: second floor rooms are quieter with less traffic

This was our first visit to Roatan and we were a little hesitant on what to expect after reading some reviews of the Henry Morgan resort. We kept in mind that this was a 3 - 3.5 star resort & we normally stay at 4 and 5 stars. We couldn't have been more pleased!

CHECK IN: Was fast, friendly, and our room was ready earlier than promised. We arrived around 0930 and had our room key and luggage at 1330hrs. We also requested an upgrade and were granted a poolside room for a small fee. My husband accidentally forgot his credit card at the front counter and it was promptly delivered to our room. Good first impression!

ROOM: Was clean, spacious, and we couldn't have asked for a better location! We were in PS4 (poolside #4), on the second floor. King sized comfy bed with fluffy pillows.. It's a great room if you want to be close to the beach, the pool, and the lobby. Our room was cleaned every day, fresh towels provided daily, and always little towel art creatures which was a nice touch. We never saw any cockroaches as was reported in one review. There was plenty of hot water, good water pressure, and liquid soap provided. There is also a hair dryer, mini fridge with two water bottles, and a safe to keep your valuables. There is also a large flat screen TV with plenty of English stations. The only negative was that the lighting was very poor, so not the greatest if you like to put makeup on while on holidays (maybe bring a lighted makeup mirror). Was not an issue for me, but might be for others.

FOOD: The food was pretty good. It was nothing to write home about, but we certainly didn't have a problem finding something good to eat. For breakfast, there was an egg and crepe station, plenty of bacon, ham, toast, cereals, fruits, oatmeal, you get the idea...nobody went hungry! For lunch, you have the option of either eating at the buffet or the snack bar by the pool. Most days we ate at the poolside snack bar and had fried chicken, or nachos with shredded chicken, salsa, and refried beans. Also at a little after 3pm, there was fresh donuts made....OMG delicious!! Most dinners we ate off of there resort, but we did have the buffet on a few occasions. There was a pasta station, always a fish dish or two, beef, chicken, soups, lots of options and always something new on the menu. There were very few dessert options (usually 3 choices), but we indulged in the fresh fruit most days. If you are looking to eat off of the resort, we highly recommend Beachers for the sea food (coconut shrimp and lobster), and Bananarama for the woodfired pizza's and calzones!

POOL: There are two pools on site. One is pretty far from the main pool and is very shallow. I think 3 feet at the deepest point, and the main pool is quite deep at 6 feet at it's deepest point. The pool was really warm, but we opted for the ocean most days.
There was plenty of loungers and be sure to ask the towel guy for cushions. They have plenty, you just have to ask!

ENTERTAINMENT: It was the usual for this sort of resort. Lots of dancing and music. We enjoyed the entertainment and the fire show was pretty cool as well.

BEACH/OCEAN/SNORKELLING: Was amazing!! The water was really clear, warm, sandy bottom, no steep drop offs, and TONS of fish!! Again, there were lots of lounge chairs with no towel games to get a good spot. Security on the beach was great and would watch your stuff when you went in the water. The beach towels are a little small and worn, so if you want a big fluffy one, bring your own.

DRINKS: People need to remember that this is a 3 star resort, and as such, you are not going to get the fancy blender drinks with the premium alcohols. Yes, they can be purchased for an additional cost off the resort (just about next door for pretty cheap), but there was a variety of drinks to choose from (Vodka, Gin, Rum, Tequila and Beer). The mixed drinks were pretty good and the Rum Punch wasn't overly sweet! Off the resort, definitely try the Monkey La La's!!

EXCURSIONS: We only did one excursion through the resort which was a snorkeling adventure and we also took in Gumbalimba Park to see the monkeys!. Both were really good, but the snorkeling was just as good if you went right off the beach to be honest. This is a diver's paradise from what we have been told, so definitely take advantage of it while here if you were into diving!

In all, we loved our stay. The people were extremely friendly and service was superb! I think a lot of the complaints are from people who are expecting 5 star service from a 3 star resort. Yes, you will have to get up and get yourself to the bar to fetch a drink. Nobody is going to bring you one while you relax in your beach chair.

For the money we paid, we thought it was an excellent value and thought for the money we saved, we could use it to go off the resort an enjoy some of the tiki bars and restaurants that lined the shores, or take a $3 water taxi to the West End!

This was my 4th stay at the Henry Morgan in the last four years ( I’ve also stayed at three other places on the island), this is still, in my opinion the best value for money. Remember it’s rated a three star so don’t expect a five star. The standard rooms are showing their age a bit, the bathrooms especially need work. But the room is still lovely and kept very clean. Don’t forget to tip your maids, they work very hard for little pay.
Since our last visit (April 2017) they have been making improvements, most notably the dinning room....its been completely redone and the food was also up in quality, crepes at breakfast, omelet and egg station, fresh pasta bar at lunch and dinner ....I definitely gained weight!
Only downfall was they still don’t have ice cream
I still suggest a room on the second floor as they are definitely quieter.
The only area where they are a let down is the alcohol....poor quality and few choices. I paid for drinks elsewhere when I wanted one.
If you know what you’re getting you’ll love it. I can’t wait to return.
I did not dive with them as their boats were always to packed for my taste and I have a terrific dive shop I ALWAYS use just down the beach...message me for details if you’d like
