We took the short climb from the Northern face of the mountain through someones farm (its perfectly legal as long as you stay on the track)
The first 700m - 1 km is all relatively easy but then it gets progressively more challenging.
We did this climb with 2 older kids and 3 little ones and everyone had a lot of fun.
Once you get up into the mountain itself, the track becomes tight as you walk through a sub tropical rain forest and you start to feel like you are stepping into a very ancient and special environment.
Our climb took place on a sunny day, but it has rained the night before so the ground was slippery and muddy. If you are wearing suitable shoes / boots - no problem.
Dont try this with thongs or as the kiwis call them jangles...lol
