Old school Wild Westcoast

Review of Cowboy Paradise
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 16 Apr 2024
A cool rustic but very comfortable place with loads of character. An oasis in the bush.
Despite varied feedback, we were excited about staying with Mike at the Cowboys.
After being advised not to arrive before 3pm ( mainly due to firing up generator and the fact it is a working farm) we chilled for a while on the trail and arrived at about 310. Mike was as expected a gruff but harmless Westcoast man. The rooms were fab. Clean and comfortable and the main saloon full of interesting character. Not everyone's cup of tea, but nothing overtly insensitive ( unless you're a bit precious and easily offended.....) After an lovely shower and change, a few cold beverages with a stunning view was just the ticket. Mike was entertaining, argumentative and indeed a character. Cooked a great hearty dinner and enjoyed healthy debate about a range of subjects. We never felt unsafe or unwelcome. If you remember its his home and land and you respect his place and expectations on how to behave, then you wont have a problem. If you don't then prepared to be told! Nothing PC here so don't expect otherwise.
We had a great time and would recommend to anyone that is respectful when visiting someone's home.

Had a fun night at Cowboy Paradise! En Suite Cabins were clean and warm, our host Mike provided wholesome no-nonsense fare for dinner and breakfast. Mike was welcoming and very friendly and we had an enjoyable evening over a few beers, the conversation was robust if somewhat idiosyncratic at time's! All in all a fantastic stay with great views of the Arahura Valley.

Room tip: Keep an open mind!

We stayed as a biking group of friends. We followed instructions, regarding when to arrive and knew what to expect re the generator. Mike was welcoming and cooked a great meal, by himself for our group of 14. We had a brilliant night, lots of fun and laughter, the rooms were clean and comfortable, shower pressure awesome!
It was a stay we will always remember and a true experience. We are very glad we stayed .Thanks Mike for a great time.

Comfortable, warm beds. Great shower pressure. Tasty dinner and generous continental breakfast. That’s all we asked for and it’s what we got. I think you have to respect you’re on someone else’s property and you have chosen to stay there. We knew in advance the generator would only be on between 3pm-10pm so don’t see how anyone could have an issue with that. We had no complaints and would gladly stay again.

We were almost put off by some comments, but we found Cowboy Paradise was exactly as described. It is an excellent spot to stay if you are biking the trail. I was the support driver so drove in and that too was fine.
The food was very good and lots of it.. The units tidy with great pressure in the shower. Mike was on his own and we felt he did a great job of feeding the group without help. The continental breakfast was substantial as well.

Mr Cowboy Paradise is an extremely aggressive abusive person. He swore violently at my wife because we arrived to stay before 3pm, his apparent arrival time (we didn’t know). We were eager to get under cover because rain was setting in.
For around 40 minutes he refused to let us into our room, and when he did, he did not turn on the power or heating until 3pm.
For the rest of our stay, until we left the next morning, he was aggressively rude to us. We felt unsafe in his presence, particularly my wife.
Considering we had to pay $250 to stay there, plus $66 for meals and a beer, we knew we deserved much better service.
I would not recommend to anyone that you consider staying there.
I had a similar experience when I stayed there with some mates several years ago. He went ballistic at one of our group who took his bike inside, and then was abusively rude to us for the rest of our overnight stay.
Silly decision for me to go back again!

Room tip: Avoid this place without hesitation
