Review of Cowboy Paradise
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 24 Feb 2024via mobile
Comfortable, warm beds. Great shower pressure. Tasty dinner and generous continental breakfast. That’s all we asked for and it’s what we got. I think you have to respect you’re on someone else’s property and you have chosen to stay there. We knew in advance the generator would only be on between 3pm-10pm so don’t see how anyone could have an issue with that. We had no complaints and would gladly stay again.

We were almost put off by some comments, but we found Cowboy Paradise was exactly as described. It is an excellent spot to stay if you are biking the trail. I was the support driver so drove in and that too was fine.
The food was very good and lots of it.. The units tidy with great pressure in the shower. Mike was on his own and we felt he did a great job of feeding the group without help. The continental breakfast was substantial as well.

Mr Cowboy Paradise is an extremely aggressive abusive person. He swore violently at my wife because we arrived to stay before 3pm, his apparent arrival time (we didn’t know). We were eager to get under cover because rain was setting in.
For around 40 minutes he refused to let us into our room, and when he did, he did not turn on the power or heating until 3pm.
For the rest of our stay, until we left the next morning, he was aggressively rude to us. We felt unsafe in his presence, particularly my wife.
Considering we had to pay $250 to stay there, plus $66 for meals and a beer, we knew we deserved much better service.
I would not recommend to anyone that you consider staying there.
I had a similar experience when I stayed there with some mates several years ago. He went ballistic at one of our group who took his bike inside, and then was abusively rude to us for the rest of our overnight stay.
Silly decision for me to go back again!

Room tip: Avoid this place without hesitation

Cowboy Paradise is a unique place that will be fun for some, but offensive for others. I wouldn't call it family friendly but we stayed for one night and had a good time.
I think it's important to remember:
* it was there before the trail and is not targeted at the average consumer. It was meant to be an event location with a shooting range out the back of the West Coast - and it feels like that.
* it's in the middle of nowhere with no power or cell phone reception. The facilities are pretty darn good for this. The generator runs from 3pm-10pm and 7am til presumably after everyone's left. This is pretty normal for backcountry places on generator.
* Mike is mostly a one man band, unless he's got Wwoofers staying

We made sure we arrived after 3pm as instructured and were shown to our room and where we could charge our e-bikes. It has a fantastic shower, and a separate toilet, with a comfortable bed, with nice sheets and towels.
Dinner was a Roast Buffet with the best potatoes ever. There was plenty of it, and everyone found it delicious.
Mike sells a small selection of drinks depending on how recently he's restocked. Wine is sold by the whole bottle only, and all sales are cash as there is no eftpos.
The decorations were very Trump supportive, and included stripper poles. It's not aligned to our beliefs but lots of things we are tourists at aren't, and that's one of the reasons we go.
We had drinks with the other guests with country music in the background sat around for the evening. We put on the hats, and about half of us got onto the ring for photos. It was a great group and a fun night

Room tip: Don't turn up before check in of 3pm - it's 2-4 hours from Kumara depending on whether you have an ebike and how fit you are.

Lovely views... but do ride on through!

Cycled in on a peak NZ holiday period, Tue 9 Jan, a beautiful day, stunning views! (+ a star) Possibly no visitor toilet.
Place closed. A guy appeared, (bound to be Mike the owner), apologise for it being closed (+ a star).
Being a complementary full Kiwi, I responded not a problem & asked (being nieve?) if this area was and old mining town.. I loved the 'I built all of this', but not the preceding 'if you knew how many stupid questions I get...' & the turned back and stump away. (Refer many 1 star ratings within these reviews)
Hey Mike (based on many negativecomments), I am sure you have made your wealth to retire somewhere quiet & never see a tourist again.
But since you naturally hate tourists, best you sell up quietly move out, as you are progressively destroying one of NZ,'s hidden secrets.
Love from a (middle age white male) 5th generation NZ farmer, with West Coast based family. (Insert sad emoji)

Room tip: Take photos but otherwise ride on through if possible!

We stayed with Mike for one night while cycling from Greymouth to Ross. We arrived after 3pm as requested and met Mike who was cooking our dinner. He showed us where to put and charge our bikes. Then to our rooms which were spotlessly clean and all ready for us. After showers and getting organised we had a beer before a great dinner - roast chicken, roast potates, pumpkin, broad beans, peas, carrots, cauliflower cheese, broccoli and gravy. Breakfast was also inclued - cereal, fruit, toast and tea. Our room was a good size and the bed very comfortable. Amazing views, really does feel like paradise. We had a very enjoyable and relaxing stay.

Room tip: Be respectful as you are staying on someone property. Do not put bikes on verandah etc with out asking permission. Arrive after 3pm.
