Worth stopping at and staying the night!
Review of Cowboy Paradise
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 6 Jan 2018
We biked from Kumara to Cowboys Paradise on a very wet day. The ride down into Cowboy's Paradise from the trail is a downhill with some switchbacks and through some very nice bush so that was a good way to arrive (vs uphill, if you had come from Hokitika direction). We were keen to get out of wet gear and were able to hang our gear on the wash line under our verandah. We had a lovely modern, carpeted, and warm ensuite room with a heater provided, separate shower, toilet and comfy bed. We had a delicious buffet meal which was served at 7pm for all guests. Mike and his staff were really friendly and we had some great conversations with the other guests that were also staying the night. There are board games or magazines also. The generator was on till about 1-2am and then switched off till morning. The noise didn't really bother us as it's essential to have power. Breakfast was either continental or cooked which provided a good start to another day of riding ahead. If you are passing through, definitely stop for hot chips and tomato sauce and a drink as a minimum or stay the night, have a chat to Mike and the other riders! This stop definitely adds to the West Coast Wilderness Trail experience.

This accommodation is in a much needed spot. Basic accommodation and meals. Dinner was a tasty roast at 7pm and breakfast is from 8am. Mike has a big vision and I look forward to seeing what this place becomes

June 2016 I booked for two people for one night in March 2017. I was told (via email) there were no ensuites available but that we were booked into 'the saloon room @ $80'.
We were greeted by the owner, Mike who said he needed to talk to me. It turned out the Saloon room didn't exist. He said he had one room available which he offered to us at $140. We knew there was another older couple riding the trail coming after us so we left the room for them. (They later told us that they had booked and paid $110 for their room) When we told Mike we were not happy about our booking he told us we could get on our bikes and leave and that he was sick of people complaining.
We were too stuffed to move on and with no internet or cellphone access it was difficult to make other arrangements.
He offered us what looked like the tool shed for $60. It was an unlined shed with bunks. You could see daylight through the walls. We had access to a shower block which was obviously the staff amenities.
The meal at $30 was not plentiful nor was it a roast. We were offered chicken legs and chops with vegetables. I asked was it okay to come back for seconds, I was told yes but when I did there was no meat left. We paid $7 for a bowl of icecream.

The generator goes off at about 11pm. There is not lighting so tricky to find our way to the ablution block during the night.
I appreciate what Mike is trying to do but he can't take bookings for a building which doesn't exist. Why didn't he make contact to say he'd overbooked and we could have made other arrangements?
We were prepared for rough and ready but I think he pushed it a bit too far!
We did have a fun night with the other inmates and I'm not saying don't go there just beware.

We were a group of 9 and after a days biking from Kumara coming down the hill and onto the flat of Cowbay Paradise was an Oasis. Our room was dry, the bed comfortable and the shower hot. What more do you need. The evening meal was delicious and plentiful and for those who want to stay up late there is music, DVD's and plenty of board games. A must when biking the Wilderness Trail.

This place is what you make it. The rooms are fantastic and the main lodge is perfect. We had a ball, the music cranked and drinks flowed until late. Mike certainly has a vision that's yet to be finished but it's lots of fun. A very worthwhile stop on the cycle trail.

You may get mixed reviews of Cowboy Paradise before you you go, but I can assure you that if you go with the flow, put on a hat and realise that this is the only show in town, you are in for a treat. The rooms are clean and comfortable - comfy bed, hot showers, and even a hair dryer! The communal roast dinner was delicious and plentiful. The extensive bar was open and accommodated every request. Land owner, Mike Milne, was a trip in himself. His eccentric manner and passionate vision made Cowboy Paradise a highlight of our trip. Keep an open mind, have a wine, put on a hat and get in the cowboy spirit. I hope all Mike's visions come true!

Room tip: Three ensuite rooms that sleep 4 - all the same - 2 bunks and a double.
