We'll share our favorites - Available year-round; minimum 4 night and 7 night stays required The Casale’s rich history and close proximity to Rome provides an authentic Italian, one-of-a-kind vacation experience. The Casale Sonnino sits on a hilltop that once belonged to the Roman Senator Caius Julius Cornutus Tertullus in 100 AD. Traces of his ancient residence, including fragments of columns and walls, have emerged from the soil to enhance the ambiance of the garden. The cistern of the ancient villa lies in the Casale's basement, and features a Roman well, Roman arches, and a system of 12th-century caves. Make sure to ask your host for a tour of this unique underworld during your stay! On the main floor, life revolves around the fully-equipped country kitchen. Meals and gatherings of family and friends happen in the expansive living/dining room, which features a working marble fireplace, gorgeous crystal chandelier, and seating for 14. Upstairs sits four double-occupancy bedrooms, a vestibule bedroom, library with beds, and two bathrooms. With a glass of wine in hand, unwind on the oversized rooftop terrace, which boasts 180 degree views that stretch from Rome to the Apennine Mountains. It’s the perfect spot for stargazing over the eternal city, playing a game of ping pong, or doing nothing at all. With Rome so near, you can tour Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museum, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Spanish Steps during the day, and then be back at the Casale by nightfall. Enjoy local shopping and dining in the nearby towns of Monte Porzio Catone, Colonna, and Frascati, or head to renowned historical sites like Tivoli Gardens & Villa d'Este, Tusculum, Hadrian's Villa and Rome's ancient port, Ostia Antica. Naples and Florence are popular day trips traveling by train from Rome's Termini station. For more adventures, take day trips to the Lazio coast, Umbria, Tuscany and Abruzzo.

Coming home
The Casale is a very special place - not only literally in its location and beauty, but in its meaning to me and my family. I recently visited the Casale this fall which was not so much a vacation but a pilgrimage to bring my parents back to a place that was so special to them, their friends and our family. Back in the early ‘90’s, my parents took their first trip to Italy. My mom being the cook and planner she was, read an article in a Gourmet Magazine about the Casale and decided this would provide a perfect location for their stay. Due to its central location near Rome and many wonderful places of interest, it became command central for all of their trips. Rome, Tivoli, Siena, Florence, Orvieto-all of these places easily accessible. The first trip was such a success, they returned many times introducing different friends and family to the charm of Casale Sonnino over the years. In 1996, we made our first trip to Casale Sonnino with my parents. All of us-both my sisters and all our children. We returned in 1998 and then again in 2005 and 2007. The trip this fall 2023 was my first time back without either of my parents. My mom died suddenly in 2018 and my father after a long illness in 2021. I had their ashes combined as per their wishes, and I have been holding onto several small vessels. There were only several places worthy of their remains, and the Casale was one of them. On the last night of our stay, with my husband and George and Claire’s blessing, we sprinkled them around the arbor where so many meals, wine, family and friendships were shared. There are few places on earth that are as special as the Casale Sonnino. The charm comes from the wonderful family and their love for this home. The history is incredible and worth a stay for sure. I look forward to our return with our children and grandchildren!

Lovely country villa with ease access to Rome and hill towns
Casale Sonnino was a terrific choice for our recent stay in Italy. Located in the Hills just southeast of Rome, it is close to several charming small hill towns, and within easy access by commuter train into Rome. On arrival day a welcoming lunch with excellent prosciutto and yummy cheeses was waiting for us. It was the first of many hospitable gestures including an olive oil tasting get-together in the kitchen one evening. On another occasion enjoying roasted chestnuts and chatting around the dining table with George about the house and its family. Then there was the short car trip down the winding roads to watch Casale Sonnino's own olives going through the machine presses. On one occasion George even agreed to rescue us and chauffeur us home when we were stuck somewhere unable to get a taxi! Boy were we relieved! He was a thoughtful and obliging host without intruding. The staff were friendly and helpful. Continental breakfast ready each morning. Charming bedrooms with good beds made up daily. We shared several bathrooms between our group with no problems. There were many places in the house to gather along with many quiet spots for reading and such. Handsome rooms, high ceilings, great windows, chandeliers, paintings, books and family portraits. Access to the small efficient kitchen with hot red decorative accents and kitted out with everything you could need if you want to cook. Plus a roof deck to hang out with a few drinks at night looking out on the winking lights of surrounding hilltowns. If driving to the local train station, be aware that the small parking lot may be full with commuter cars. Not a big deal. Just include some time for the short walk down the road for the next scheduled train. The service into Rome is excellent with lovely views of the Italian landscape. Sit back and enjoy! One note: The motorway runs far below the house in the distance but once acknowledged we were no longer aware of it. Convenient link though for the drive back to Airport or other connecting roads.

We are so moved that you enjoyed staying at our Casale and rolled with "living local". These little details - books, good beds, family portraits and cozy kitchen are what make a house a home. The ancestors are smiling. We hope you come back soon!

A Beautiful Home Base for Exploring Rome & Surrounding Hill Towns
We spent a delightful week here in October and found it be a perfect launching point for exploring Rome and the charming hill towns of the area. We were a party of eight (four couples) and found the Casale to be plenty big for both gathering together and time alone. The villa itself is beautiful and the surrounding vineyard and olive groves are very tranquil. There is a train station (Colle Mattia) a quick five minute drive away that connects to Rome. It's a 20ish minute trip into Rome and tickets were only $2.50. Even more outstanding was the feeling of hospitality that we enjoyed during our entire stay. We all fell in love with George, our host, and we hope you'll give him a hug for us when you book your stay. It's easy to overanalyze things when trying to decide where to stay. I hope this review will make you more at ease when making your decision. It's a beautiful place, in a gorgeous setting, run by really nice people...and the coffee & morning pastries weren't half bad either 😎

Thank you for this lovely review. We can't agree more with how easy and inexpensive it is to get into Rome by train. It's so much better to stay in the country far from the tourist crowds and pop into Rome to see the ancient sites or go shopping by day. By night, check out the local restaurants around the Castelli Romani and be happy. Come back soon!

A spectacular experience ...
What a joy it was to stay at the Casale Sonnino Sonnino! When I originally planned our trip from London to Rome for our party of six we had intended to stay in Piazza Di Spagna until… I discovered that we would need to self isolate for 5 days on our arrival! With only days to go before our departure I was desperately trying to find a place that would accommodate my daughter, her boyfriend, myself and mine, my ex partner (my daughter’s father) and our family friend of many years! With an age range of 16 to 70 this was not such an easy task especially considering our needs and the fact that we would not be allowed to go out at all. And then I found the Casale Sonnino Sonnino! The owners are brother and sister Claire and George who live in NYC and Rome respectively and work together to manage the Casale Sonnino with George principally looking after the vineyard and olive groves. What struck me first about this place was its vintage charm which conveyed easily through the photographs not to mention the ample exterior space, well equipped kitchen and huge living spaces into which we would eventually end up spreading ourselves out during our five days. Given the unusual situation with regard to self-isolation Claire and George both negotiated with me to find the best way of ensuring that we could stay and have everything we required for our five days while maintaining safety for the group ,for George and for any staff on the farm. George was exceptionally attentive from the outset and enormously helpful in the days leading up to our stay accepting shopping lists via WhatsApp and even making some suggestions himself with regards to particular items. I think what he did for us was rather exceptional. When we arrived, I was bowled over by the beauty of the exterior and the spaces and the rooms in the Casale Sonnino and was showered with praise from the rest of the group! The quintessential Italian charm and character of the Casale Sonnino Sonnino had me somewhere between the 18th century and the 1930’s. The décor and cleanliness were of a superb standard and the linens and towel bales and bathroom toiletries and baskets of sweets that accompanied every room along with the flower arrangements swiftly turned what was a already a gorgeous place to stay into a luxury experience. There was nothing that we needed that had not been provided and in my mind while I got to work playing classical records (a collection unlike anything else I have encountered that could have kept me occupied for years, not to mention the amazing 1930’s jazz CDs) I was already planning my next trip! The collection of books containing exquisite art collections and memorabilia on everything from vintage cars to typesetting was heavenly as was our ease in spreading out! One of my concerns about self-isolating was that we might all get tired of each other if we lacked space. There was no chance of that happening at the Casale Sonnino Sonnino where one could simpy disappear if one wanted to and in fact there was so much space that we were all perfectly content lounging around the place like cats and we all found our niches. The wifi connection was very good and the kitchen was a dream especially since I love cooking and was doing this nightly for six people which required some very large bowls and pots for the task and of course a supremely well equipped kitchen! George went above and beyond the call of duty bringing us the very finest that the region had to offer in mozzarella, ice cream and pastas, wines and much more. We didn’t want for a single thing and our food experience alone was something I could write about for some time! We made friends with George and his little family of animals instantly and were able to socialise in the accepted way and enjoyed many evenings eating al fresco always asking George to join us since he felt like a member of our family. Despite George living on the premises we had the feeling of absolute exclusivity and always felt that the main house was entirely our own. If you think this is how it should be you are correct but I can assure you that I later rented a villa for 10 days which offered exclusivity but the stay was almost entirely ruined as it was corrupted by the constant intrusions of its housekeeper who used our kitchen as if it was her own and was always moving around in our private areas. George however having given us advice on how to use the Casale Sonnino really did give us exclusivity only entering our space briefly when invited to do so. The rest of the time we socialised outdoors a little during the day and in the evenings. It was a delight to have George around as we were isolated there but felt that we were still really learning and connecting with the area and that region and he had much to tell us about the history of the Casale Sonnino and his family’s connection to it. That family link sets this place aside in ways that alter the experience completely as there are touches of the family’s presence over the years around the house and it contains a gentle and warm personality that is inviting and welcoming and in doing so sets itself above most other accommodation. The exterior of the Casale Sonnino is truly beautiful and it does not surprise me that it and its interior were used as the set for a magical film. I used the Casale Sonnino to take many photographs of my daughter outside and inside which are so visually lovely that they will be treasured for years to come. There was a very special calm and a peace about the Casale Sonnino which I have found unmatched in any other place I have every stayed in. It resonated with its own unique style and beauty in a way that made everything we did there a delight whether that was sleeping, relaxing, reading, bathing, dining, cooking, listening to music, or pouring over the collection of books containing so many offerings of art, everything about the Casale Sonnino was somehow magical and it is the one place that I will endeavour to return to not only for its own unique personality and charm but also that of its inhabitants. Who knew self isolation could be so good but it really was. So, in conclusion I have to say now that if you are looking for la dolce vita, you just found it!

Great for Families with 20 Somethings
Our group of eight, two families with four kids in their 20s, rented the Casale for eight nights in late December for the Holidays. Upon walking into the Casale, our 23-year old son’s reaction was priceless. He thought the house was very “cool”. It was better than staying at a hotel. We wanted to stay at the Casale to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary with our children. The 5+ bedroom house was our “home" for the duration. The vintage style fully equipped kitchen was completely accessible to us. We had wonderful meals in the dining room and spent nights sitting by the warmth of the fireplace in the living room. We even had time to watch sports and Netflix when hanging around the Casale. The house exudes old world charm yet was comfortable for all of us. The bedrooms were clean and spacious and the staff who served amazing high calorie breakfast was pleasant and friendly. What made the trip unique was our warm and affable host and owner, George Treves, who was as knowledgeable as any seasoned tour guide and shared his personal insights about the home which has been in his family since 1883 as well as the surrounding areas. By the time we departed we felt like he was a part of OUR family. It was an incredibly positive and memorable experience. The home was a quick 30 minutes by train into the heart of Rome and efficient (the subway was fast and inexpensive). Yet we were able to experience life in the Italian countryside, seeing small towns such as Castel Gandolfo, Nemi and Frascati where we had the most delicious gelato. The fried croissants at the Jollybar in Grottaferrata that George took us to were to die for! During our stay we decided to drive to Florence, to see specifically the David. We thought to take the train, but found out for the eight of us it would cost too much for a day trip. So instead, we piled into our van, set WAZE and off we went. We parked steps away from the center of Florence. It was so easy. Highly recommend driving! Some of us ventured south to Pompeii for the day which was about a two-hour drive each way. Well worth the trip. If you are looking for a new and different way to experience Italy, this is the way to go. The Casale is perfect for families and friends who want to share a memorable experience. You will not be disappointed. Arrivederci!

Ideal Italian Vacation Spot !!!
Ideal Italian vacation spot: Relaxation with spectacular views of incredible vineyards surrounding the entire Casale and olive groves everywhere. We were there for the grape harvest in Sept. What a treat. Felt right at home with comfortable sweet accommodations. Beautiful sunsets from the premises especially the rooftop deck. Art, culture and language immersion, couldn’t get enough of it. No escaping all the great cheeses, sausages, food and wines - out of this world. Our friendly host George one of the Casale owners was full of historical information and tips of where to visit and what to do. Our driver and tour guide Simeone Ricci was exceptional not only knowing exactly were to go and how to get there but his stories and knowledge surpassed our expectations. Our cooking staff Tiziana and Giovanna prepared the most amazing authentic meals, they shared recipes and received us every morning, lunch and dinner with warm smiles and laughter. The location of the Casale’s proximity to Rome can’t be beat. Near by towns, Roman ruins, castles even day trips to beaches all possible and must do activities and places to explore. Our painting group of 7 led by artist Nancy Sargent Howell departed extremely rewarded and lucky to have had the opportunity to enjoy such a fabulous vacation with fantastic beautiful scenes to paint. Casale Sonnino is an ideal location for group vacations with family and friends. Couldn’t ask for anything more perfect. Hope to return soon!

Casale Sonnino is the Italian Villa Stay of your Dreams!
It’s been a little over a month since I returned from a dreamy two-week stay with friends at Casale Sonnino, The villa itself is gracious and spacious. Both the common rooms and the bedrooms are the perfect mix of elegant and homey. Breakfast is generous and features delicious local baked goods. Situated on 25 acres of olive and grape groves, the villa is equally stunning inside and out. Our days were packed with exceptional experiences but it was a joy to return each evening to be greeted by the Casale’s friendly dogs. Our hosts Claire and George, fifth-generation owners of the Villa, were the epitome of hospitality and warmth. From castles to cappuccinos, they expertly guided us to the best local gems. The Casale is conveniently located one-half hour by train outside of Rome. However, there is so much to do locally. The villa is only 30 to 45 minutes from Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli Gardens, The Garden of Ninfa and so many other gorgeous places to discover. Our days were packed with exploring historical towns, hidden eateries, stunning gardens, and medieval castles. However, staying put to drink locally sourced wine and cook up pasta in the kitchen was also a delight. Excuse me while I pour myself a glass of wine, close my eyes and imagine the breathtaking evening light playing on the vineyards and olive groves of this stunning slice of Italy. For an exceptional Italian vacation, put together a group of your friends or family and take a trip to Casale Sonnino. I cannot wait to go back. It feels like home.

Experience The Italian Countryside Minutes From Rome
I have been traveling to Italy for over 20 years, and this was my first visit to Rome. My time at the Casale Sonnino Italian Villas, located 30-40 minutes by train, outside of Rome was one of my favorite vacations. Friendly staff, playful dogs to greet you on the property, and comfortable accommodations with some modern amenities, the villa is truly authentic Italian. Hosts Claire and George were terrific. We started each morning with breakfast. Their extensive knowledge of the area's history, restaurants, shops, and sites was spot on, allowing our group to have an exceptional experience every day. I would recommend renting a car. It allowed us to visit the Casale's quaint nearby villages for day trips where there are lots to see. This vacation was one for the books. About the neighbourhood
The "Castelli Romani" is a group of 12 towns dotting the Alban hills on the outskirts of Rome. Ariccia, Castel Gandolfo and Nemi and the two lakes are worth exploring with your rental car. Our small town, Monte Porzio Catone is a 1K walk from our gate. There you can find your cappuccino and breakfast danish, gelato, pizza fresh out of the oven, restaurants, ATM machine, a playground for small children and small grocery and vegetable stores. Frascati, a thriving regional destination, is located 3 kilometers away and has stores, restaurants, parks and its cultural centerpiece: The Villa Aldobrandini.
Getting around
The Casale Sonnino is conveniently located off of the Rome-Naples Highway A-1 which runs Southeast of the city. It takes 30 minutes to get into Rome-Termini station (Central Rome) by the train at Colle Mattia, a station about 1K from our Villa or Frascati, 3K from the Casale. There is parking for your car at Colle Mattia (free) and Frascati (fee). There is ample parking at the Casale for you and your family/friends. It is most convenient to go into Rome by train. Monte Porzio Catone is a 1K walk up the hill. For all other nearby towns, sightseeing, restaurants and day tripping, you will want a rental car for getting around. I will be happy to recommend the car rental company that I use - it's reliable and reasonable!
