Breakfast was exactly what we wanted before our hike. Very friendly owners who stayed open past closing long enough for us to get there and have breakfast. They have a cute dog too. Would love to have tried dinner there but we ran out of time. Next time!

We had such great expectations going to stay on the Barrier but were extremely disappointed and let down by the accommodation offered at this waterfront lodge.
Well, it's not really a 'Lodge' in the true sense, more like a motel.

We were travelling with a group but unfortunately the studio room we were allocated was unacceptable.

In fact I can't even imagine a single person happy to be given this room - so do not book the studio room.

It is really small and uninviting. You walk directly into the entrance way where the shower is allocated. Then into a bedroom with a double bed and no room to swing a cat. We were so amazed at the small size we didn't even see where a toilet was.

No tea/coffee making facilities; no room to put your bags down or even hang up clothes.

Overall, there was a complete lack of communication about the group booking and we had the feeling that we were being rushed through the arrival, check-in process.

Whenever you travel you always look forward to seeing new places and experiencing local culture. There didn't seem to be any attention to detail or service in this property.

Our friends who were given better rooms were also disappointed with little things - like no power on one morning; lack of service or even just people around to be able to ask questions or service from.

Would definitely think twice about staying there if we returned to the Barrier.

Room Tip: Rooms at front of property only have a sea view.

We have stayed at Tipi and Bobs twice now. Great Barrier Island is a great get away from Auckland. Tipi and Bobs Wterfront Lodge is a a good spot with amenities onsite and a short walk to the pub and cafe.
The menu is seasonal, the food tasty and fresh. The breakfast is good. Nothing is too much trouble, the hosts offered to prepare a breakfast and take it to the room as we had an early start for the wharf to wharf. We will be booking again for the 2016 event.

If you are looking for an unspoilt island (it reminded me of Jurassic park), good old fashioned kiwi hospitality and a location to die for, you must put this place on your bucket list. Pete and Margery are very welcoming, Margery will look after flights (or you can travel by ferry) and transfers - so you can leave those arrangements in her capable hands. Travel tip: if you are flying, there is a strict 15kg luggage limit BUT there is no max size for liquids (as there would be on an international flight). Good, basic, clean accommodation - we had suite 5, which is on the top floor and has panoramic views from the balcony. There's no need to cook as there is a great restaurant and bistro attached where Pete is head chef. An easy 5 minute walk away is a small store with basic supplies, a cafe and a pub. There is a ramp opposite the driveway where you can go for a quick dip OR walk a little further along the road and have your choice of deserted beaches. We will return here the next time we go to NZ - for sure!

Room Tip: Suite 5 - but there were a couple of other rooms at the front of the hotel which would've had good views

We stayed on great barrier for a long holiday weekend to complete some hiking. We booked into Tipi and Bobs for our last night on the island. I booked into a small studio room as it was the cheapest option at $135 per night. It was very small with, no view, no shampoo or conditioner, no fridge or tea and coffee facilities. The shower was also in the front entrance room. The room however, was clean and tidy but at $135 per night I was expecting a bit more.

The place was nice with a beautiful view out the front, the breakfast was reasonably priced and quite good. The staff member was also very helpful and friendly. I think this would be a nice place to stay if you were in a larger room with a view.

The location of the accommodation is close to a local pub and cafe but quite far away from the ferry terminal. I would recommend hiring a car.

Room Tip: Avoid the small studio, for such a beautiful island you got no views and could hear the generator in the evenings.
