Tipi and Bobs Waterfront Lodge

If you are looking for an unspoilt island (it reminded me of Jurassic park), good old fashioned kiwi hospitality and a location to die for, you must put this place on your bucket list. Pete and Margery are very welcoming, Margery will look after flights (or you can travel by ferry) and transfers - so you can leave those arrangements in her capable hands. Travel tip: if you are flying, there is a strict 15kg luggage limit BUT there is no max size for liquids (as there would be on an international flight). Good, basic, clean accommodation - we had suite 5, which is on the top floor and has panoramic views from the balcony. There's no need to cook as there is a great restaurant and bistro attached where Pete is head chef. An easy 5 minute walk away is a small store with basic supplies, a cafe and a pub. There is a ramp opposite the driveway where you can go for a quick dip OR walk a little further along the road and have your choice of deserted beaches. We will return here the next time we go to NZ - for sure!

Room Tip: Suite 5 - but there were a couple of other rooms at the front of the hotel which would've had go...

We stayed on great barrier for a long holiday weekend to complete some hiking. We booked into Tipi and Bobs for our last night on the island. I booked into a small studio room as it was the cheapest option at $135 per night. It was very small with, no view, no shampoo or conditioner, no fridge or tea and coffee facilities. The shower was also in the front entrance room. The room however, was clean and tidy but at $135 per night I was expecting a bit more.

The place was nice with a beautiful view out the front, the breakfast was reasonably priced and quite good. The staff member was also very helpful and friendly. I think this would be a nice place to stay if you were in a larger room with a view.

The location of the accommodation is close to a local pub and cafe but quite far away from the ferry terminal. I would recommend hiring a car.

Room Tip: Avoid the small studio, for such a beautiful island you got no views and could hear the generator in...

The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Food from the restaurant was really good and plenty off it - huge portions and the chef was happy to provide meals that weren't on the menu.

The accommodation is basic but all you need for a relaxing break with great views from the deck.

If I ever go back to Great Barrier Island then I will definitely stay here again.

There is also a diary and Irish pub within a ten minute walk, plus lots of quiet beaches we were the only ones there for most of the time.

We were booked there with a group and were pleasantly surprised. well maintained, spotlessly clean with good food and a bar with great atmosphere. The outside drinking/dining are is excellent in the summer, great views all round. Excellent hosts that have the "can do' attitude.

Room Tip: Unit 5 has stunning views.

Peter and Margery are superb hosts and the food is excellent. The location of the hotel must be one of the best spots on Great Barrier Island.

Nothing seems to be too much trouble for them both and we enjoyed every single minute of our stay with them.

The room was not really equipped for cooking meals as such in the room but this was not a factor for us and since Peter cooks exceptionally good meals I was more than happy to eat in the hotel. There are other places to eat close by too.

Room Tip: Try and get the room right at the front with the full waterfront views.
