Great stay at Sinalei

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 5 weeks agovia mobile
Have spent 7 nights at Sinalei and was reading the recent reviews and was a little concerned about staying here. My family (wife and daughter 14 y/o) arrived on the late Auckland flight and had arranged a transfer with the hotel which worked well. On arrival given it was late it was a nice touch they had prepared sandwiches for us in our room. We stayed in a 1 BRM villa OVB and there are a number of villas available the pick of them I think start with BS (short for beachside) which is overlooking the water. We ate at the restaurant mostly and found the food really good and the service was good. Overall the hospitality I felt was authentic not always the sharpest and sometimes a few little quirks came out but did not worry us enough to make us enjoy our stay any less and were so relaxed given the location and beach choice or pool was perfect for us. We bought our own snorkel gear which came in handy as the snorkeling out the front of the villa around to the jetty with the freshwater spring coming up was great. Definitely worth jumping off the jetty into it as it's a deep hole. You can hire rentals through the hotel for circa 150 tala a day and also the resort does tours which I think you should book in advance. Apia is around 40 mins by car and the ocean trench around 35 minutes and well worth the drive. We would stay here again and really liked the relaxed vibe of the place it is definitely not a commercial or corporate resort and if you are somewhat laidback the little quirks you will overlook and see the location and genuine nature of the staff come through and enjoy it.

Room Tip: Swim off th jetty, book a rental car from them, and go snorkeling with Manoa tours a 5 minute...

Everything that has been mentioned in the pervious 1 star reviews is true, we found this out the hard way.

This being said, everybody needs to remember the hardships these people have been through in recent times with the Tsunami and then covid, yes everything is drity, falling apart, etc etc BUT the people are lovley (mostly). Yes that means Sinalei is MASSIVLEY overpriced for what it is.

In summary, this is a 3 star resort trying very hard to regain its former glory as a 4 star but it will never happen with the current management who would not even talk with us to address some of the issues we had and their reservations team took over 3 months to reply to emails.

We stayed at Sinalei Reef Resort. After being recommended it we found it very run down, really run down for the prices they are charging, not worth it.
Rooms were old, tiles old, showers old and very very dated, linen old and you could tell it was musty. The tiles were old and depressing and the air con rattled all the time. No TV, No Phones and No Mini Bar.. On our last night my wife went to the toilet and nearly got bitten by a centerepede so please watch out for kreepy crawlers. Food at the Ava I Toga when it did decide to open was bland and tasteless. Really crap food for high end prices. From the fish of the day to the steak it was FROZEN FOOD. FROZEN. HORRIBLE. STAFF FRIENDLY but had no idea on high end service and how to handle complaints.
Lastly watch out for the the owner, an elderly bold headed chap who was more interested in chatting up my wife then he was about the crappy resort service, food, rooms and over all CRAP service he was promoting. WE WILL NEVER EWTURN AND WE URGE YOU TO GO ELSE WHERE AND AVOID SINALEI. Coconuts, Seabreeze were better options and we wish we had booked there and not gone to Sinalei which was poor, old, crap and over rated. NOT 5 START BUT MORE 2 STAR....WATCH OUT FOR THE OWNER OLDER CHAP

I'll start by saying that this hotel is in a fabulous location, beachfront access, close to some of the main tourist attractions like the Giant Clam Sanctuary, Coastal Walk, To Sua Ocean Trench and many waterfalls. The hotel itself has been there since 1996, it was destroyed by the 2009 Tsunami, rebuilt and then affected by Covid. Is also advertised as an Adults only hotel with no Children Under 12yrs.

We decided to stay here based on what we saw on their spectacular website and the reviews we read. We were celebrating a birthday and our Wedding Anniversary. We booked a package which included a Tropical Breakfast (that was upgraded free of charge by the hotel to include anything off the Breakfast Menu) which was fantastic. A 30 minute massage, snorkel gear and the use of Kayaks. We also had a Resort Credit and an upgrade if available. The hotel occupancy was about 8 couples the whole time we were there. (no upgrade was offered nor any acknowledgement of our Birthday or Anniversary).

So when we arrived very early in the morning we were checked in with no hassle at all and taken to our room which was very basic and no TV (which we didn't mind) and an outdoor shower which we loved especially when it rained. The bed and pillows I have to say were awesome. Our room was cleaned every day by the very hardworking housekeeping team. Some of the lights in our room didn't work and the furniture could do with an upgrade. There was also a spa outside our room but unfortunately it was empty and the other main Spa at the Wellness centre wasn't operational either so maybe they should change their name to Sinalei Reef Resort until they get the Spa working again.

They have two restaurants on their website - Ava I Toga Overwater Restaurant which is open (website says closed for renovation) and Laumoso’oi Restaurant (which is the one that is actually closed for renovation). They have a Poolside Bar, Uncle Harry's open for drinks and afternoon tea each day from 3-4pm. If you are getting as excited as I was about the afternoon tea you see on their website then don't, it consisted of 2 plates each day, some days with the worst sandwiches I've seen and other days with biscuits or small pastries (again nothing like what you see on their website) and either tea or coffee. Happy Hour from 5-7pm, well I wouldn't call it that at all, I'm not sure about you but most of the Happy Hours I've been to are 50% of the price or by one get one free etc. Their not so Happy Hour was $2.00 off your drinks.

The Menu - Ava I Toga Overwater Restaurant. There was some variety but not much as the Lunch and Dinner Menu was pretty much the same. The food was ok and for the prices that you paid which weren't that cheap, I have to say I was disappointed. On our 2nd last night my Hubby chose the Chilli Mud crab and instead of being 1 or 2 large crabs its was about 7 small ones with not much meat at all. After attempting to eat it with no kind of Cracker utensil offered we advised the staff that we weren't happy with the meal and in the end (after speaking with the very unhappy chef) weren't charged for it.

Our massage was ok but the lady at the Wellness centre seemed to be put out when we wanted to booked it. When we didn't have our voucher handy to give her she wasn't happy but we were told no voucher was required as it was part of our Package.

If you plan to Snorkel I suggest you bring your own gear as their goggles are so scratched you can hardly see anything underwater and they only have one working Kayak (single) the other one (double Kayak) has a hole in it.

The Fia Fia night that again is advertised on their website wasn't on (not sure why) and they even had people from outside the resort come for the show and buffet only to be told its not on. We were offered the option to go to the Hotel next door, Coconuts to see their show but decided in the end not to go.

The plus side to our stay was that there were hardly any other guests in the Resort, about 5 other couples. It reminded me of one of those creepy horror movies but it was more like Faulty Towers....

If I was to go back to Samoa I wouldn't stay here again.

Room tip: Great Location, staff were helpful, thats really all I can say about this resort. The hotel isn't as luxurious as it appears on the website

This resort is beautifully maintained and in a picturesque location. Really close to great sights, would recommend car hire (which can be done through the resort) to see the giant clams, to sua trench, coastal walks and waterfalls. Our room was clean and tidy, really spacious for the price (I think it was a garden view room), and close to the pool and amenities. The restaurant is beautifully located and food was mostly good. Staff behind the bar and at the restaurant were friendly and helpful.

I did find some challenges with booking and getting clear info from the reception staff. I only got booking confirmation after reaching out 3 x times. When we arrived it was quite difficult to get info on booking fishing (offered on website but no longer available), if there was wifi or not (we needed to research a few things after having no reception on Savaii), timings for our transfer that had already been confirmed. There was inconsistency between staff info and what’s online / printed in rooms that need updating. This was a bit frustrating and a real shame because otherwise we found everything was else great.

Room tip: Recommend hiring a car if staying here which is relatively cheap to do!
