The venue is a beautiful grad II listed building, the interior is beautifully decorated (although light fittings need cleaning as numerous dead flies visible) the staff are very polite and friendly.

The tea was like dishwater, my husband had to ask for another tea bag. My daughter had a hot chocolate which had a large amount of coco powder at the bottom of the glass and unlike the tea had too much chocolate in it as it tasted very bitter.

The afternoon tea was very disappointing, the sandwiches were poorly made some bread was buttered some wasn’t, very cheap beef used and although horseradish was supposed to accompany them we didn’t taste it! Cream cheese and cucumber, where was the cream cheese?

The scones were dry and needed the clotted cream and jam to make them edible.

The cake selection was good however, the balance was not great all so sweet! My daughter did enjoy the blueberry cheesecake.

Went for a Murder Mystery event with family members and decided to spend the night. We were greeted by a very friendly and helpful young lady who booked us in and showed us to our room. The furnishings and decor were modern and the room very clean and comfortable.
Went for a drink in the bar while we waited for the rest of our party, and learned from the lady behind the bar that most of the staff were from the University (the hotel is actually on the campus) they were studying for a degree in hospitality. Apparently it’s the only place where students can get experience of all aspects of the hotel industry as part of their degree course.
The murder mystery evening was hilarious and very professional, with dinner being served while trying to decide ‘who done it’.
Dinner was what you would expect when large parties are catered for, but was tasty and well presented.
My only gripe would be that to get a bigger variety of alcohol, you needed to visit the bar in the brasserie, where seating was fairly limited, then walk through the hotel to the lounge areas, not that it prevented us enjoying the evening in any way!

Room tip: The lower priced rooms are in the modern extension, which are spacious and well furnished.

My sisters and brother in law bought this for us as a birthday present. On arrival we were greeted by a friendly staff member who showed us to our room. Room was very well laid out, spotlessly clean and well appointed overlooking the courtyard. Went to the bar and were served again by another staff member who was just as friendly. Later that evening we went to dinner. The restaurant was set up in a conference room but was very nicely presented with black chair covers and orange sashes. 3 course set dinner was served efficiently and arrived hot. Food quality was good. Then followed a really enjoyable evening of murder mystery which was performed well by the actors. We followed up by going into the brasserie bar and sat chatting till 12.45am. No one asked us to leave and got the impression that they would have been happy to serve until you wanted to stop drinking, no matter the time. Breakfast the following morning was very good, again served with a smile and good quality.
This hotel is in the grounds of the University and all staff are studying there for some relevant subject, eg hospitality, catering etc. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and will return.

It was a treat for me with a close friend and she booked a afternoon tea.
When we got there it looked very impressive but we was the only two there and it was 1pm which surprised me.
Our food came out looked like it should do but on tucking into the sandwiches got to the beef one and to our horror it was rock solid, that's all I can say, we complained to the waiter and we asked to see the manager but no one appeared.
On receiving our bill we was so disappointed that we kicked up a bit of a fuss.
The manager was very nice and sorry to hear of our experience and offered us a complete refund, but the point to all this is it shouldn't of happened in the first place, why do some people just don't take pride in what they are serving to customers p who in turn pay there wages.
Such a shame but will not be returning .

Dear Kim,

I am sorry to read that you will not be returning following your recent experience. Please accept my apologies for the standards you experienced, which, I can assure you, are not the standard we deliver. Afternoon tea at Wivenhoe House has a very good reputation, and so your review is disappointing to read.

Please do get in touch with me directly should you change your mind, and decide to return.

Yours sincerely,

Oliver J. Q. Brown

Staff went above and beyond to make our evening special. Couldn’t have asked for more particularly from Ellie, who is an outstanding manager, team leader and all round great asset to the organisation.
