“A lovely, restful, retreat for 2 weeks”
Reviewed 9 April 2016 for a stay in April 2016

My family and I stayed at Mariantonia for the 2 weeks Easter holiday, our first holiday in 8 years. It was just what the doctor ordered, quiet, peaceful and very restful. Too quiet for my teenage son and 20 yr old daughter but perfect for mum and dad! Mariantonia was a beautiful villa, better than we had imagined and the weather was kind to us as well with sun and blue skies for the first week and cloudy and windy but warm for the second week. Gozo has lovely bays to visit and is great for active walkers not so great for my husband who struggled with the hilly and rocky environment. Many of the roads in Gozo have been recently renovated and tarmacked so car travel to and from the capital Victoria and all the tourist sites/bays is brilliant. If you don't have a car there is a good bus service available. Most local people speak English and are lovely and friendly although a little pushy for sales in Victoria as you wander around the smaller tourist shops and market stalls. My husband and I are definitely planning to return to Gozo in the near future and hope to stay at the Mariantonia again.

The setting was stunning, beautifully tended gardens both front and back all overlooking it's own citrus fruit orchard, but even more stunning was the view from the large veranda, from sitting there with a glass of beer I could see the blue lagoon on Comino right across to St Pauls bay on Malta (even the Hilton hotel in Sliema ).
The villa itself was very spacious and airy with a well equipped kitchen, 3 bathrooms and even a good selection of books. Exterior lighting around the BBQ area and pool made for some great evenings at home.
The village centre of Qala was a few minutes walk away and had 4 great restaurants and three pubs all within the small square, supermarkets and a chemist were also in the square.
It is always handy to have a car in Gozo especially on your first visit, but if you have seen the sights already then don't bother, everything you need is at hand from the villa even a diving school!, buses and taxis are easy to get in the village and fresh bread and groceries can be bought from the ever present vans that roam the streets.
Remember your insect repellent and bite ointment in high summer, though the villa has insect screens for a comfortable night.
Some of the linen supplied by the owners was in need of replacement, but was clean and adequate enough. The owners themselves were very friendly and very helpful and though they lived above us we only saw them as the garden or pool was tended early in the morning or if we needed their help.
