“Relaxing Rural Retreat”

In truth, the cottage was chosen initially as a compromise.
We were going to spend as much time as possible at the Edinburgh Fringe but were faced with a lack of available and sensibly priced accommodation in the city.
With 5 in our party, the cottage offered excellent vfm for a week's stay and quick and direct access to Edinburgh.
While not totally tucked away it is easy to miss the access gate - for the first few times! The owners were not around when we arrived but this was known beforehand and so easy and sensible key retrieval had been put in place.

The interior of the cottage is attractive, simply laid out and well furnished.
The kitchen has lovely views over the hills behind the property with fields that start only a matter of feet from the kitchen window.
The dining area has a table that is sufficiently large to absorb daily tourist clutter without the need to clear up before sitting down to eat.
Slovenly - but useful.
The living room has the stove which was a great focal point and of interest to those (children) who have never had a real fire as you can chop your own wood and prepare, light and maintain a real fire which really adds to the feeling of the homeliness in the cottage.
There are books available in the living room and bedroom if you forget or run out of holiday literature.
The bedrooms are very spacious.

As I said before we had intended to spend a lot of time in Edinburgh but the vibe of the cottage was so relaxing that having cards, books and board games with us we ended up spending time just in and around the cottage which was a lovely way to unwind.

Livingston is close by for a main supermarket shop and I think has a shopping mall for those who need retail therapy.
There are good pubs locally with some really interesting menus.
We didn't see any of the otters that are meant to be round and about but did have a deer run across the road in front of us which emphasised the rural nature of the area while still being able to link easily and quickly down A roads and Motorways to the cities and tourist attractions.

I did have to spend one day away from the cottage with work and had to fly from Edinburgh airport which is remarkably accessible from the cottage but far enough away to be an invisible presence if you don't have to know it's there.

As a measure of how much we enjoyed the cottage we are going back on a break to Scotland again this year and were looking to book up at the cottage once more but sadly found some wise people had already booked ahead of us.
I think as a base for the visiting the East coast and Edinburgh, walking, enjoying the countryside and general relaxation this cottage ticks all the boxes and if coming back to the area there will be very little hesitation in re-booking the cottage; I would certainly recommend it to family and friends.
