“A home from home”
Reviewed 6 August 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We had a fantastic week in Castle View Cottage in July. Communication with the owners and directions to the property were spot on. The owners were very welcoming on arrival and showed us around the property, nothing was any hassle.

The property was spacious, tastefully furnished and very clean throughout. It was also very well equipped. The four of us (myself, partner and two friends) were very comfortable for the week and the views from the property were simply stunning. Even the weather was good! We'll definitely be back next year!

“Charming cottage BUT...”

The cottage is as described, but that does not tell the whole story. I'll begin at the end because that just about sums it all up - when we returned the keys at 9.45am on the Saturday, the owners were both in their dressing gowns - insulting, unprofessional, unacceptable!
There was no mirror in the twin room, skinny pillows with no spares available and only one bed had been made up - I have never encountered that anywhere else, it just looks cheapskate.
There were 2 badly dried-up air fresheners in the cottage - the owners claimed that previous guests had left them. Yeah, right. Less than half an inch of soap in the bathroom dispenser - previous guests again. Cobwebs upstairs and down - cleaner's fault. Who supervises the cleaner?
The patio does have a delightful view - but it backs onto the main road through Marazion, which can get pretty busy at times.
Would I stay there again? No, no no!

Firstly, this review and the previous "disappointed holiday maker" review are not from 2 separate bookings, but were sent in by a dissatisfied mother and daughter who stayed for the same week in the same cottage. Their reviews don't tell the whole story either. They wrote to us on returning home, demanding a substantial refund, and we gave a polite, considered and detailed response to their complaints by email at the time, addressing the points raised and explaining why we felt that a substantial refund was unjustified. We received a rude and sarcastic reply dismissing our explanations as "waffle and excuses", and these two reviews followed very soon after. Of course, this may just be coincidence.

We have covered some of their complaints in the previous "disappointed holiday maker" review. To respond to this review: we already have the bedroom mirrors but cannot install them until we have a break in bookings in the autumn, due to the adhesive used in the installation having an odour that hangs around for a day or so. We don't keep spare pillows in the cottage, but do have spares in our house (20 yards from the cottage) available on request, and we always make it clear to guests on arrival that, if anything is needed or unsatisfactory, we are more than happy to provide it or put it right: at no time was this offer taken up. We made up two beds for the two people staying, not one! As we do not provide air-fresheners or soap dispensers, clearly these were left by previous guests - however, these items should have been disposed of at changeover, and we have amended our pre-arrival check to prevent such issues arising again. As for cobwebs, our cottages are thoroughly cleaned at change-over: not always so easy to get rid of spiders, though, so the odd cobweb may well appear during the week and, short of fumigating the cottages every Saturday, there's not much we can do about that. The term "main road" can hardly be used to describe the narrow winding street that runs though the village. The sort of traffic passing through the village consists of cars with the occasional bus/tractor/bike. The busy main road is the by-pass around Marazion, which takes the heavy traffic away from the village. As for the dressing gowns, I'm afraid we overslept! This is not something we make a habit of.

“Disappointed holiday maker”

My mum and I came to stay at Castle View cottage and we loved the view of St Michaels Mount from the garden. The property has 2 reasonable sized bedrooms and a good sized lounge and dining room. The kitchen was equipped for cooking but do bring your own cling film, foil and kitchen paper as there was none supplied which I've found standard in cottages these days.

The owner Richard can to meet us when we arrived and showed us around the cottage and then left us to it and wasn't intrusive at all which was a slight worry of mine, taking a letting with the owners next door!

However mum and I were disappointed in the standard of the cottage, it all felt basic and for the money we paid could have rented a far more luxurious cottage from another company. We've been left scones, jam and cream with everything to have a cup of tea or a bottle of wine or a home baked cake as a welcome in other cottages over the years but nothing at Castle View. There was wifi but it only worked upstairs in the lounge. In a village full of lovely galleries and craft shops to find no art work at all in the cottage was a shame as it makes it more homely and shows off the beauty of Cornwall and the artists that work in the area.

All in all its a lovely location with a stunning view but I won't be returning, I'd rather get more value for my money elsewhere.

We are disappointed to see that you did not find our cottage to your satisfaction. Naturally, we would wish to consider and reply to what you regard as shortcomings.

We appreciate your comment about artwork: we have considered this point before, and will be addressing it in the near future.

Wifi access to Superfast Broadband is available in all rooms in our cottages, not just in one room, as stated in your review.

Concerning lack of kitchen items, we have looked at inventories on several holiday letting agency websites, and can find no mention of kitchen foil or clingfilm being provided (as standard). We find that most guests shop before arrival and buy these items as a matter of course. We do provide kitchen towel.

As for cakes scones cream etc, welcome packs are usually provided to welcome people to cottages where there is no personal welcome from owners or caretakers, and you appear to have stayed in such cottages previously. When staying at our cottages we are pleased to provide a personal welcome, meeting guests on arrival, offering them a brief tour of their cottage, answering any questions they may have, and generally making them feel at home. We could provide all sorts of goodies as well, but this would only result in higher cottage prices.

We explain in detail on our cottage webpages what we provide in the way of kitchen and bathroom consumables, and the photos show clearly the interiors of the cottages. We really don't believe that a lack of a couple of non-standard kitchen items, artwork and cakes etc constitute describing the cottage as basic, and awarding only a two-star rating, when almost all our other reviews give it four or five stars and are very complimentary about the cottages, seems rather harsh, to say the least. Whether this has anything to do with your prior demand for a substantial refund (see next review "charming cottage BUT", submitted by your mother) we couldn't possibly say.

As for renting a more luxurious cottage for the same money - quite possibly elsewhere, but not in Marazion. You may well find better "value" in less popular places, but the only realistic way to check whether you paid the right amount is to compare our prices with other cottages in Marazion. Our prices are mid-range for Marazion, with the result that our cottages are currently (July) booked right through into October and November, with nearly 40% of week bookings being repeat reservations, and bookings already coming in for next year. Marazion is a unique place, in a totally unique setting - it's a one-off. You have to compare like with like to get a sensible comparison of prices.

“Well equipped, beautiful little cottage in a stunning location”

Castle View cottage is a beautiful place to stay in one of Cornwall's most picturesque locations. The owners live opposite and were very welcoming, providing us with all we needed for our short stay. The pictures of the views on offer from the cottage's upstairs living area and incredible garden do not lie - looking out on St. Michael's Bay and the mount itself is breathtaking, and you can even hear the sound of the waves on the rocks when the windows are open.

Despite going in January there was plenty to keep us occupied in Marazion - an excellent selection of pubs and eateries, some amazing walks and of course the Mount itself. We were very lucky with the weather and one day even found ourselves eating lunch in the garden of the cottage, which is a sun-trap sheltered from the wind, in little more than a t-shirt and jeans!

The cottage is very comfortable, furnished nicely and provided us with everything we needed to cook. We would recommend it to anyone.

“Fab cottage and location”

We booked this cottage for a week in July. It is a five minute gentle stroll into the village of Marazion, but down a quiet lane with parking for one car. The cottage is well equipped and very clean. The living areas are upstairs and bathroom and bedrooms down stairs. You have access to a small hard landscaped terraced gardens with chairs and a picnic table. It's accessed from the living room through some French doors. The pictures don't do the view of St Michaels mount justice. Great view from the sitting area!
Richard and Sarah are helpful, but unobtrusive owners and made us feel very welcome.
Marazion has plenty of eateries, a corner shop, pharmacy, pubs, hotels and gift shops. Not to mention the beautiful sandy beach. If down this way again we would definitely book this cottage again.
Travel tip - we didn't use our car as parking can be a nightmare in cornwall. We got a first bus family ticket. £50 for 7 days unlimited travel on all first buses in cornwall. I think it does 2 adults and up to 3 kids, but check the kids on their website. It may be more. Marazion has good links to penzance and st Ives . In penzance you can get buses all over and it's only 3.5 miles from Marazion.
