The setting for the hotel/restaurant is spectacular.
We went into the restaurant in the evening so only got a feel for the outside and grounds, but could tell they were worth a follow up visit.
The restaurant is lovely, very traditional and relaxing.
Suitable for everyone and very good food at affordable prices.
Well worth a visit.

We had been looking forward to an opportunity to visit this hotel ever since Paradores announced it as one of their properties 2 or 3 years ago. We had very high expectations but unfortunately they were not met. The entrance into the hotel is very impressive, a long sweeping drive ending in a courtyard with the hotel entrance on one side and outbuildings and shop on the other. As we were staying for 3 nights we had booked an apartment, which in retrospect might not have been a good idea. The apartments were in a separate block in the "working" part of the estate. The furnishing of the apartment was all very modern, with a fully fitted kitchen with all the appliances - except a kettle! The level of cleanliness was OK,, but not brilliant - a previous occupant's shower cap was hanging from a hook in the bathroom, there were cobwebs in the wall corners, a filthy cup had been put back in the cupboard and the outside of the bedroom windows were so dirty they were almost opaque. The cleanliness issue went a little further than this in that we noticed a waste bin in the main courtyard was not emptied in the 3 days we were there, and an ashtray sat on a table on the terrace un-emptied for 24 hours.

The terrace, overlooking the formal gardens was a pleasant space for a drink, but getting service there was to say the least difficult. There was a call button, but twice we gave up waiting after 20 minutes and went to seek a member of staff only to find them sitting in the kitchen chatting.

The breakfast buffet was quite good, and a positive was the selection of juices available. However, whilst there were dispensers of cereal there was no cold milk on show. Perhaps it was available on demand, but should you have to ask for it. Eggs were available to order, but nowhere did it say this facility was available, and the waiting staff did not offer it.

The hotel looks amazing, and could be exceptional, but at the moment it flatters to deceive. We have had the opportunity to stay at 5* hotels around the world, and this is certainly not a 5* hotel.

Such a lovely historical building and nice lobby area, however, rooms and food need improvements.

A lot of small things and touches were missing in the hotel and the room - the wifi and TV not working & only one of the two key cards was working which were rectified timely. The hotel ground had plastic rubbish and did not look well maintained. The room that we had was very spacious but it was a corner room and very dark. It's ok for us as we only stayed for one night, would not like to be in a dark room for long. The bathroom was modern and spacious but the bathtub was very slippery especially getting in and out, there was no extractor fan in the bathroom so condensation after a shower made the mirror and floor wet and slippery. The TV in the room was small for 4 star hotel standard & no turn down service. The safe box was not attached to the cupboard so it was useless as one could pick it up and run with it.

We had half board & the food was ok not great for Paradore standard.

Located in the sleepy Central Portuguese town of Penalva do Costello, about 25 km from Viseu, is the Parador Casa da Insua Hotel. This is an 18th century baroque style manor house built on the orders of Luís de Albuquerque de Melo Pereira e Cácere, a military man and administrator who made his money in Brazil. What a beautiful place with English and French gardens, ponds, vineyards and orchards. I recommend you stay here, we had a lovely time.

We stayed for two nights half board in beautiful weather in mid September. Paradores are specialists at tastefully restoring historic buildings as hotels. This is a stunning recent example of their expertise made even better by preserving the best Albuquerque family rooms as a museum. The bedrooms are tastefully decorated, the beds comfortable, and the bathrooms well appointed. The staff were friendly and helpful. The dinners and breakfasts were of a high standard. You can drink the Casa's own produced wine with your meal and sample their own cheeses. The gardens are a delight and the outdoor pool has a sunny aspect. This is a restful part of Portugal away from city bustle and Algarve beach crowds. The towns of Viseu and Gouveia are worth your time and we also enjoyed some mountain walks. Just make sure that you are prepared in advance for the electronic tolls on the motorways!
