Formerly Almar

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 26 Feb 2017
This was my fourth visit to the hotel and Capurganá and my first under Nautilos ownership. On my previous visits (the first in 2003) the hotel was named Almar under different ownership. I found it to be pretty much the same if perhaps a little less classy. For example Almar offered wine with the buffet dinners and there was not the issue with load music that other reviewers have complained about. On that last note just hang on to the earplugs supplied by the aircraft you fly in on. The food was quite adequate if not special though I really liked the fresh ocean fish including Barracuda. The rooms and beds are comfortable and the bathroom clean with everything in good working order. The AC worked well and was quiet.

The village has changed quite a bit since my last visit in 2009. At that time there were two motorcycles and now there are scads and a big tractor and other machines. There is an impressive new school paid for by a foreign country but our horsecart driver didn't know which.

This time we didn't go on any tours or boat trips having done them all before. Instead we made the hour long walk back to the waterfall ourselves on a day when the other visitor were on a tour and had the pool and falls to ourselves. We also hiked a trail that heads more or less north along the coast beginning at the end of the beach in front of the hotel. It's easy to find but not mentioned by any staff. We didn't see any this time but on the last visit I found yellow and black poison arrow frogs in shaded and vegetated areas along that trail.

There is pleasurable snorkeling a short distance from the beach with a nice variety of colorful fish. On past visits I was warned to wear water shoes when swimming because of the prevalence of the black urchins but this time I didn't see any at all. You can swim all the way out to the island in about half an hour using swim fins.

As Almar there were organized activities every evening like karaoke etc. but no longer which was fine as I didn't care for them. The one exception that I did miss were the toad races on the beach. Pretty stressful for the toads though.

All in all it was a pleasant visit once again and no complaints about the new management which was friendly and helpful. My only complaint was the wifi which cost five thousand pesos daily did not reach the room.

Room Tip: As others have stated get a room away from the pool and reception area to limit noise from load...

We were moving to Nautilus to be near beach. First impresion was good and we even used bar inclusive option (70000). It quickly became obvious that place is just nice cover...

Bar: serving beer and coctails in dirty plastic glasses. Maybe 1.5 dcl, so you could imagine frequency of refilling.

Food: extremely poor for such price

Rooms: first night we had air con from previous millennium but that was ok due it was so noisy that music from disco was not so annoyingly.

Second day we insisted to change room and we got one with new air con.

MAIN ISSUE: there is disco on the beach almost on front of hotel. To be precise: disco and three beach caffes. Each have at least 300 W powerful loudspeakers and you guess about music...

Music (bass) is so loud that even if you use your fingers to cover ears, dooom, dooom is still there.

First night we were lucky: it was started to rain at 3 in morning. Second was worse: it stopped only after electricity was gone...

After second day we had enough and move to Miramar.

As conclusion: this hotel has no value till they not solve problem with annoying loud music at the night

This is a simple place, let's be clear. This is a small village that most North Americans haven't even heard of, so if you're reading this review, you're onto something! Capurgana is wonderful, and this hotel is top notch for this tiny town. Rooms are basic and clean. The food is very good -- again, this is not big city five star fare, this is hotel-on-the-beach-in-a-tiny-village excellence. The pool is lovely -- very clean. Ditto the ocean -- it's steps away from the hotel, and the sand and the water are lovely. Staff are very friendly and helpful, and we enjoyed a couple of tours arranged through the hotel which I also highly recommend. (esp. the waterfall hike and the boat ride to Sapzurro.) There's no wifi available! What a treat...

      Hotel

      Pros:
-The staff of this place is EXCELLENT, they try to do everything for you to have a great stay and my complains about this hotel has nothing to do with them.
-Super close to the only beach you can go without a boat
-Gorgeous pink sunsets right in from of your room
      -Very clean
      - Right next to Josefina's, the BEST restaurant in town
-They organize group outings to other beaches almost everyday

      What was Ok:
-The cold showers, it's very hot so actually i didn't mind at all
-The towels were old and only a few
-They don't have a bar of soap, they only have liquid soap for the shower, we bought one ourselves, no biggie
-The pool is kind of old
-The food was ok, we only had dinner once and breakfast everyday.

      Cons:
-I basically thought the beds were unbearable, if you love camping you won't have a problem but even camping I use an air mattress and that is far better than their beds, I literally had to place pillows on top of it and sleep on them so i could do it, still my back hurt in the morning.
      - The loud music in this whole town sucks, at least if they played reggae or caribbean music, something that would fit the environment but no, plus there's no much to do and going to bed early is pretty much what you can do, this hotel plays loud music every night, if you are looking for a place to relax I wouldn't recommend it, specially on weekends.

Overall my stay in Capurgana was an experience i wouldn't want to do it again, the nature is great (but not well taking care of, i.e.: trash all around) but this town seem to have seen better days, everything is rundown and i would not advice anybody to come to this place. Even the good things we did had a "but", like for exemple the snorkel in La Miel was really good, but you have to cross a big path of underwater trash to get to deeper waters and see amazing fish.

There's something das about this place...

      Reviewed 9 July 2015

To give some context, the vast majority of my traveling involves work trips to New York and San Francisco, where I stay in very nice (think $500/avg per night) hotels -- so, I have what is probably a higher than average standard when it comes to accommodations.

That said, this was the single most memorable vacation I've ever taken, and this hotel played a big part it in. Just keep in mind:

      1) The rooms are sparse. And I mean SPARSE. Tile floors, no hot water (we're talking COLD showers!), and the only furnishings are a couple of nightstands and a bed. The biggest surprise was the "mattress" on the bed -- it's not really a mattress, it feels more like some sort of slightly padded piece of cardboard.

      BUT...

None of that matters. In fact, I would have been somewhat disappointed if this had been any more luxurious. No kidding. The island is so unbelievably secluded and tropical that this type of accommodation feels exactly right. It also helps that the rooms are extremely clean, which is really all that matters.

The amazing staff more than makes up for the cardboard beds, too -- everyone is incredibly friendly and helpful. My boyfriend and I didn't speak a word of Spanish, and no one really spoke any English, yet every person was patient and kind.

By the way, YOU MUST take a boat trip to the Sanblas Islands in Panama. I mean, it's not even an option to skip this. It was by far the highlight of our trip and something I still think about often. The hotel arranges the trip -- which seems to be run by some locals out of a somewhat dodgy boat -- but it'll be the best day of your life. No joke.

Bottom line: If you're at all put off by how challenging it is to get to Capurgana -- get over it. It's worth the plane ride to Medellin and the next plane ride (on a tiny charter plane, to boot) to Capurgana and the donkey ride to the hotel (there are no cars) and the bumpy boat ride to Sanblas. Just do it - you will NOT regret it.

We changed to this hotel after spending the first few nights at the Tacarcuna lodge, which was also fine but very limited in resources (breakfast extremely plain, poor security for rooms, and surrounded by a plaza that blared out music at top volume 24/7). Coming to Hotel Nautilos was very relaxing in comparison, you have the advantage of the sea breeze which is absolutely essential as temperatures go up to 40 degrees celcius, rooms are clean and well equipped, staff were very friendly, and they arranged buffets on the beach and other events that you can take part of if you wish. There was also a pool (yet never cooling because of the temperatures) and we had a beautiful view from our room overllooking this and the beach, which is right outside the hotel.
Tip: if you stay here, also visit the Coco Loco shed on the beach and have a beautiful rum and coconut drink (in a coconut) overlooking the sea.
The staff at the hotel were also the friendliest and most professional tourism personnel we came across in Capurganá. Apart from them, we had quite a horrible week arguing with rude locals who constantly try to charge you three times the price for everything, or charge you for things you do not have to pay (be aware: you do not have to pay for overweight at the docks if you have some, that would be with the airport), simply for being foreigners. Colombians in general treat their tourists very badly, using them as money banks, but this experience literally took the price. Be on your guard, and if you're not prepared to argue (or have the spanish to do so), I would not recommend going, the destination is not worth it. The beautiful parts to the area are the islands around capurganá, including crossing over to Panama, Capurganá should just be used as a stop over to get to these.
