I only had a weekend to explore so I wanted to maximise my outdoor time without going too far from Wellington. Kapiti Island was perfect. It’s an hour away on the train and then a short boat ride. Numbers on the island are limited so you can enjoy your walk without crowds.

I found the two hour walk uphill to be challenging but manageable. I stopped a lot to look at birds and the view. Pleased to have made it to the top for a fantastic view. Thrilled to have seen wild birds that you don’t see anywhere else.

Everyone at Kapiti Island Eco went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed the day. Everything went smoothly. I enjoyed learning about the birds that are protected here and I am glad that there are people working to ensure their survival.

The facilities on the island are great (nature centre, well-marked trails and some flush toilets). Bring your own food and drinks and carry your rubbish back out.

Yes, it does take a bit of effort - but the island is amazing. It really goes to show what NZ must have been like before predators. Fabulous boat ride and excellent walking tracks. The climb up to the top is demanding and not for the faint-hearted.

We had been planning to do this trip for many years this was our third time lucky. It was good to see that Kapiti Island Eco Experience complied with the DOC regulations for pest control.
The boat ride over and return was good, the short talk at the beginning of the day on the Island was a good introduction to the Island and the history.
A good day

The bird life is fantastic. Easy walking tracks to feeding stations and an informative guide. A great day out and once in a lifetime experience.
