We went to the hot tubs and they had a choice of just a private tub for my family or they had a communal tub. We chose the Private tub and we are glad that we did, the experience was a lot more
Pleasurable for me. The tub was heated to a warm temperature not too hot, not too cold and stayed at that temperature for the duration of the time. It also allowed us to have a private conversation where no other people can hear us. They charge by the half hour. They keep the time and will have a buzzer to tell you when time is up. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking to relax and take away all worries.

The park is the only decent one near the Hobbit movie set, which is a 30 minutes drive. For one night, it is a good spot to stay. The reception were friendly and helpful. It was also busy at this park, since it was the All Blacks and Lions match, there were more lions fans with their camper vans. It was raining the whole day, so the ground of the powered sites of green lush grass once driven by a heavy van, turned muddy. One of the vans got stuck in the van but they had a mini tractor to remove your from your predicament.
They had a much bigger chlorinated pool 28-30 C temperature, one mineral smaller pool 37 C which is 1.40 m deep, and a shallow one of 39 C. There were lots of school children that evening which made it a happy place.
The pools are a bit tired, rough flooring, might ruin your bathing suits. The showers look tired and the hot water was tedious, especially washing your long hair. The kitchen was small, not too many amenities and some of the burners didn't work properly or at all.
The toilets are alright but didn't see any for the disabled.
It rained heavily that night and by the time we wanted to drive away, the tires were stuck in the mud, but they come and help you to get out of the mud, very good service.

Great place to stay. Handy to so many Waikato places of interest. We visited Cambridge Hamilton Tauranga and of course enjoyed the site hot pools. Dated buildings and pools but current owners making best efforts to make them acceptable including decor updates.

We spent a night at Opal Hot Spring and the place we stayed was nice, clean, neat and tidy with bathroom attached. By the time we reached there, it was already late and near to midnight. It was really nice of the owner to wait up for us since we were the last one to check in that day. We didn't managed to enjoy the pool as we had to leave early the next day. Overall, it is a nice place to stay and highly recommended.

Room Tip: The Tourist Flat has 2 rooms with bathroom attached. One room is with double bed, another room is with 2 single bed.

Our last family visit to Opal Springs was almost 3 years ago. At the time the pools were looking very tired and unloved. It was pleasing to see new owners ( research shows they took over 2015) have made a difference. They are restoring this hidden gems heart and soul. We are a family of 4; parents with two teenage daughters. The main pool has a slide which keep the girls happy. With them often returning to the warm thermal waters to warm and energize again. Found the pools and changing facilities clean and tidy. A retro family friendly atmosphere. Won't leave our next visit as long. Close to Matamata if you were staying in the camping ground and needing supplies.
