budget accommodation with friendly service

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 31 Jan 2022
We were warmly welcomed and greeted by Dennis who makes you feel as if you’re entering his home, rather than an impersonal guesthouse.
The rooms are quite basic, but clean, we had minor issues, which were resolved.
There is hot water and air-conditioner - all very fair considering 45$ a night. In other places we paid 35$ for rooms with terrible mattresses, no electricity and sparse running water.
The meals are home-style and cooked by Dennis himself.
Friendly ambiance and conveniently located. Would recommend.

If you travelle to Pemba, Lala Lodge is definitelly a place where ypu can stay. Dennis, the owner is really nice. He cooks great food every evening for 10$/pers. He can also arrange a lot of tour at reasonable price.
I would come back if I ever come back to Pemba.

located near the Port, in the south of Pemba (quite far from other places of interest on the island), the plce itself it's nice, also if the private "beach" couldn't be used to swim, as too close to the village.
we didn't like the manager, that was quite rude an charged for a tour more than he said before.
about the food, he sells him as "the best cook on the island", but if true it means that the average level is VERY poor...

Wifi works (if you're lucky) only in the common areas.

We arrived in bad weather and a power cut, but we were made to feel very welcome straight away by Dennis and the team. Everyone went out of their way to be helpful, including having a load of laundry done for us on site and getting antibiotics for free from the hospital! The food was lovely, the atmosphere very relaxed, and Dennis sorted us out with a boat trip to Masali, a must do, some hard to come by wine, and also some wood carvings for family back home. Very restful and a good introduction to Pemba.

I intended to stay for a night as the lodge is located very close to the ferry station and they leave early in the morning to the unguja island, but extended my stay for many reasons. The food Denis and his wife cooked was very nice, he values that a lot. The terrace gives a really nice view to the sunset, Beachfront. Denis also organised a trip to misali Island which was a top tip!!! Intact reefs, perfect for snorkeling on a robinson crusoe island. Western rooms
