A group of 6 of us had lunch here before going to the Roman ruins down the road. It feels like a small, family-run place, and the food was excellent. We couldn't believe how cheap the food was, especially as it tasted so good!

The only slight let down was the forgetful waiter. We ordered a variety of pizzas and pasta. One of our party wasn't hungry so just ordered a portion of fries. We also asked for various drinks. The food arrived, but no drinks. When it was obvious these weren't arriving, I asked the waiter. He was very apologetic, admitted he'd forgotten, and produced them immediately, so no big deal.

Sadly the fries never turned up. I would've asked, but the person who ordered them wasn't hungry and was happy to just share a bit of everyone else's. I imagine, if we'd reminded the waiter, he would've sorted it out.

Fantastic pizza I had buffalo mozzarella Margherita my fiancé had ortolana which had veg on it. Lovely thin base, fresh tomato sauce and beautiful creamy mozzarella plus 2 beers and coffees. Could not fault food or service and no hard sell unlike other places in the area. Highly recommended

Pizza, always and everywhere, should be a minimalist dish. In modern times, when many restaurants and customers are no longer particularly constrained by the finances of what was once very much a dish of the poor, it is easy to add just a little more cheese and tomato or a few more olives, anchovies etc.

However, great care should always be taken not to overload the topping, lest one end up with an American-style creation, or as the late, great Keith Floyd put it, a ‘culinary dustbin’. Sadly, too many of the pizzerias in Sorrento have fallen into this trap and have lost that crucial minimalism.

As for the pizza base, it should be thin with just a little very slight blackening at the edges. The cooked dough within the crispier edge should still be soft enough to fold or roll, as the diner wishes.

This is exactly how it is at Luna Caprese. Our pizzas, at EUR 5 each were traditional perfection. With half a litre of cheap but acceptable red wine, a litre and a half of mineral water and an espresso, the total bill came to EUR 20.50.

To say this is a family business is something of an understatement. We we served by a total of four people, including what appeared to be the owner’s granddaughter who was about seven. Indeed, there was a cacophony of noise from children arguing inside. Fortunately, we were on the small terrace at the front.

Having arrived at Eraclano station to visit the ruins of Herculaneum, just head downhill towards the archaeological site and Luna Caprese is about a four minute walk on the right hand side, hence absolutely perfect for an early supper when you come back up the hill having visited the excavations.

After looking at TripAdvisor reviews, we decided to try this restaurant and were not disappointed. Over the two visits, we had a couple of pizzas which were easily the best pizzas we'd had so far in Italy. I also had a tomato and mozzarella spaghetti which was so delicious I've had to recreate it at home because I missed it so much. If you are in the vicinity, this restaurant is a must!! Traditional Naples style, family owned and obviously loved by the locals. Only thing to be aware of is that they accept cash only - there are ATMs nearby.
