Excellent vacation

Incredible vacation. Service is impressive and very friendly. Food is great, room is great. Entertainment services provided by Carlos and Shekenda, and rest of staff are truly enjoyable. Golf course is in great shape, however the humidity and heat should be considered.
Date of stay: September 2024
Room Tip: Don't pay for expensive lobby store sunscreen. Some available by towel services

We've been Iberostar Club members since 2018.. We visited a couple of other "Grand" ones before and we came to this resort based on reviews and recommendations. We had very high expectations following the incredible experience we had on our visit to the Grand in Montego Bay, Jamaica. It didn't take long to feel the disappointment. First thing was a sloppy letter from the Prestige club person assigned to us apologizing for not meeting us upon arrival. He called the next day and offered to meet with us to welcome and introduce us to the many quirks in this particular facility. There was nothing extra special about his welcome or invite to upgrade. Throughout the whole week we were there it was more than obvious that he did not care one bit about us and only did the minimum to get us to accept his upgrade offer (which was ridiculous but that's a different story with a different review!). Sure.. We told him we were celebrating our anniversary and he sent a bottle of champagne with a couple of fruit "bites" to our room (literally 4-5 bites of fruit and 2 half pieces of chocolate). A couple of days later it was my birthday and again he sent another bottle of champagne with 3 pieces of macaroon to the room. He didn't even send a message with either one. That might have been his best standard but we come after a WONDERFUL experience at the Montego Bay Grand the previous year where we had a huge red ribbon on the room door welcoming us upon arrival, where they had a happy birthday sign on a cabana on the beach just for us with a champagne bottle. Where our room was decorated with towels forming birds and hearts and HBD with roses on the bed and another bottle of wine then a cake after dinner with happy birthday on it!! I mean coming from that to a bottle of champagne and a couple of macaroons was night and day for us.
Only when I complained about having to go all the way to the next level hotel to have our massage did he offer one single day of couple massage at the spa at the hotel we are staying at. Otherwise we had to pay extra. Every day we had to travel to the next level hotel to have the massage separately there. Couple massages even there are extra!
Every morning he would text me to ask how we're doing and if we decided on the upgrade offer. When I finally said we did not accept it he did not even bother to respond and we stopped hearing from him until we left. I even sent him a message the day we left and he totally ignored it.
Needless to say that this guy's actions spoiled most of our expectations. Add to it a very limited number of restaurants with average food. A remarkably under average buffet with stale bread, old cheeses and tasteless food. The buffet was the worst as far as the food. The other restaurants were average.
I have to give credit where it's deserved. The butlers were wonderful, most of the staff were very helpful and nice to us. The inside of the hotel is elegant, the quiet pool is very pretty, entertainment was adequate. But if I were to choose between this place and Montego Bay I would most definitely pick the latter. By far Montego Bay is superior on so many levels especially their prestige person Martha who was simply amazing while Eddie in Cancun was lowest grade amateur.

Room tip: If you were to choose between this resort and the grand at Montego Bay Jamaica.. RUN TO Jamaica!!

If you need to straighten your Queen crown, this is the place. Oceanfront Butler Suite for the win! I've been to Mexico many, many times and stayed in some pretty luxurious places. The waterfront rooms with butler service and access to 4 other owned connected resorts is the way to go! The butler service here is a 10 out of 10! There's so many pools, bars, places to eat, and shopping experiences.. you will never have to leave. Staying in the Joia Paraiso (grand) gives you access to everything with no barriers, unlike staying in one of the other owned properties that are connected. Foam parties, romantic dinners, fireworks, chauffeur services in the top extended carts provided by your butler, archery, shooting range, tennis, pickle ball, top tier gyms, bicycle rentals, convention center, shows, salons, spas, clubs, lobby bars, taco spots, burger and fry joints... literally everything. Room and bottle service here is superior. Worth every dime! Miss our team already, this place is five star for a reason. Special shoutout to Gabrielle, Adrian, and Luis! Highly recommend. What a week !!

Room tip: Get the oceanfront Butler service, you won't regret it!

We stayed for two weeks. It was incredible. The views from our beachfront room were beautiful. The swing and couch on the balcony were perfect for a late afternoon nap. The swim up pool bar and games by/in the pool were always fun because of the entertainment staff- Carlos was outstanding as were Xquenda and Alma. I also loved doing yoga on paddleboards in the pool. Be sure to take a Stanley cup or similar to keep your margaritas cold and a pool float. The food was delicious. We enjoyed every restaurant. And the drinks at the pool bar and the lobby bar were fantastic. The chocolate martini was a work of art.

This was our 4th visit to the Grand (now called JOIA) since 2016. We love the staff and we always have a great time, and this was no exception, but we happened to stay during the week they reopened after a month-long closure for renovation in August, and it just seemed like they weren't ready to reopen. By the time we left, most of the facilities were open, and maintenance was wrapping up, but we paid full price for what seemed like half the facilities, and a lot of construction.

Staff: This is the best part of the resort and the only thing that would make us consider coming back, so I'll say it up front. They really are wonderful. The staff at the bars, restaurants, pools, beach, and the cleaning crew are all great and super attentive. Many of them remember my wife and I by name from past trips, which is remarkable considering how many people pass through there.

Check-in / Sales Pitch: Check-in was straightforward. You'll immediately get asked if you'd like to receive a "no-commitment" sales pitch for the Iberostar Club membership in exchange for some free stuff (excursions, massages, etc.). After previously refusing every time, we decided to do it this year. We got 1 massage and 2 tickets for the snorkeling boat. If you do it, you can probably negotiate one more item into the deal. Just know that you're in for a minimum of 2 hours. The check-in rep at reception will tell you its 45 minutes. This is a lie. The sales pitch is extremely aggressive. Bogus math, special manager's deal, decision has to be on the spot or offer goes away, etc. Once you've finally turned down the last proposal, the smiles will turn to scowls, and then the guy pretending to do a survey of the experience will try to offer you one last proposal. I'm pretty even-tempered and I was pretty annoyed by the end, but the snorkeling trip was great. In my opinion, unless you're visiting an Iberostar property multiple times a year, it doesn't make sense.

Rooms: Clean, spacious, modern. Comfortable bed. Huge bathroom. Mini-bar always stocked. Nothing to complain about.

Restaurants: Disappointed. For an all-inclusive resort, the food quality is excellent. I wish I could tell you all the restaurants were great, but unfortunately, only about half of the restaurants were open the entire time we were there (6 nights). The themed restaurants used to require reservations, but now have a first come, first served policy (except Haiku). The buffet, Italian and French restaurants were open for the week, and the Hibachi restaurant opened mid-week. The Mexican, Surf & Turf, and Steakhouse never opened.

Beach: Plenty of umbrellas and chairs. Sand is pristine, and the staff does a good job maintaining the seaweed that is typical of the region.

Pools: There's a lazy pool and a main pool with a swim-up bar, which is where we (and a huge percentage of the guests) typically spend a lot of time during the day. CLOSED when we got there. By day 3 it was finally open, or at least half open. One side remained closed and sectioned off with a construction crew working the whole week.

Entertainment: At 9:30 every night, there's a themed show. A mix of musicals, circus acts, fire-dancers, etc. They're fairly entertaining. During the day, your typical pool games. It seems like the day entertainment has dropped off considerably compared to years past.

Bars/Liquor: Selection of liquor is great. Don Julio, Woodford, Tito's, etc. Daniel at the lobby bar is great. The lobby bar is where we'd wrap up most nights and is a great place to mix it up with the other guests.

Off site/Excursions: Can't speak to this. The only thing we did off-site was a snorkeling trip, which was nice. The resort has plenty of activities to keep you entertained, and staying at the Grand you're able to use all the facilities of the adjacent properties, so we rarely venture out.

Fitness Center/Gym: Really disappointed. My wife and I are gym rats at home, and we like to exercise in the morning while we're at the resort to offset the effects of drinking at night and keep the wheels from falling off. The Grand has a great gym. Too bad it was CLOSED for our entire trip to redo the floors. Instead, they moved a few pieces of equipment and cardio to 2 rooms in the Convention Center and made a makeshift fitness area. The entire resort was closed for a month but they waited until it reopened to change to gym floors. To make matters worse, the fitness center staff is terribly unprofessional. They're either standing around doing nothing in particular, or worse, using what little equipment there is to get their own workout in. They are the one exception to the otherwise exceptional staff.

All in all, we had a nice time, and when everything is open, the Grand really is a great value, but all the closures left us feeling a little cheated.
