“I loved Montreuil-Poulay”

Very nice cottage. I bought 30 days of wi-fi from Orange (provider name) and it worked well with my laptop. I used the attic bedroom which had great cross-ventilation(watch your head on the window and rafter while climing the stairs to the attic. There are two other bedrooms on the middle floor.

It's a few minutes north of the city of Mayenne (one chateau) and south of the town of Lassay-las-Chateau (three chateaux!). Walk one minute to the local store of great coffee and he'll reserve fresh-baked baguettes or chocolate croissants for you each morning. I started each day with his coffee and he has necessities in food and soap, etc.

Great little cottage!

“Loads of character!”

We stayed at the cottage for two nights on our way back from the south of France. What a contrast! Bags of character, a really interesting place. Very well equipped kitchen, books, games and very friendly and helpful owner. Also very clean. Lovely place to stay. If I was to query one thing it would be the safety aspect of the stairs for little ones. A cot is provided upstairs but due to the age and precariousness of the staircase I would have preferred stair gates. Apart from that though we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

“A superb escape!”
Reviewed 27 April 2014 for a stay in April 2014

The cottage is laid out well with almost all the creature comforts you'd need. It is worth mentioning that there is no tv, dvd or wifi. As we travelled with our 5 year old son it was a minor culture shock! This however, was quickly turned into a lovely benefit as the 3 generations gathered around the large dining table, talking, playing games while eating the local produce and enjoying fabulous wines (and juice)!

It's small village location is very picturesque, with a local shop, church, lovely walks and views in nearly every direction. There is the occasional HGV passes through but you can only hear them as you set back from the main road, making it safe for younger children. It is worth mentioning the stairs as they are a little tricky to navigate for the older traveller but my 70 year old mother with her hip replacement and several glasses of wine managed just fine!

The garden and parking bay opposite are well kept and spacious, with a set of patio furniture and a BBQ makes it ideal for a little of the al fresco as it catches the sun all day!

Mayenne is only a short drive away with every shop you can hope for from a big Aldi to fine jewellers. There is so much to see and do in Mayenne, it easily fills days accommodating every age group. Other towns in the vicinity are well worth a look, St Suzanne was our favourite.

In short the cottage is perfectly placed within a glorious part of France. It's purposeful lack of technology almost forces you to relax and unwind, there is ample space to be on your own or take advantage of how family focused the place is. Yes there are characteristics about the cottage that some may find awkward, but it isn't a new build hotel near an airport or city ring road, its a charming old place in the heart of the countryside. We came away from there refreshed and closer as a family!
