We rented 5 kayaks with our 3 children ages 17, 14 and 11. They had a lot of fun going both upstream and downstream on the Pororari River, near the Pancake Rocks site. It is a safe activity with fabulous views of the cliffs and rainforest from down below.
Quite safe and really beautiful. See the lush rainforest from a different perspective, look up at the towering granite cliffs, glide over clear green river pools. Idyllic! Also a good workout for your arms if you’re 50+ and female, but definitely doable. Remember the sunblock, but don’t miss the best thing to do in Punakaiki.
So glad I made the time to get on the water - only had just over an hour to spare so paddled up the river and in minutes was blown away with the beautiful scenery - the views of the cliffs and bush are stunning. Highly recommend!
What a gem of an operation. Stunning spot on the spectacular Pororari River. The owner is a real character and getting equipped for the trip is entertaining in itself. Very reasonable prices. The bush, birdlife and rock formations up the river are incredible. Absolutely recommended.
We had an awesome trip up the river. Owner- operator Ken relaxed and helpful. Quite affordable also $45 for 2 hrs. Enjoyed looking at his amazing paintings, very talented. Thanks Ken. From Andrea and Kerry
The river is tailor made for what is a totally counter intuitive idea that you paddle upstream to a section above rapids and then enjoy them on the way down. Best avoided by TripAdvisor clients who aren’t so familiar with the laws of gravity! But for everyone else, I thoroughly recommend as a great way to discover the joys of paddling your own boat, and on the way down learning about fluid mechanics! Delightful service from the gentleman who runs the place. The only thing that made a stop over in Punakaiki worthwhile in my view.
