Can’t find anything on the web but there’s tape around the sign and a fence across the path. Good thing there are other good tracks around here if you have a car (Porarari river!) but you’d be livid if you walked out here for nothing.

We tried to do this track, but it has currently been closed. It would be worth checking with the DOC website to see if it has restrictions before attempting this path.

A rather easy walk along a nice path that meanders slightly downwards brings you to the Marine Reserve where you get nice panoramas (Shoe Island) and even a view of a waterfall ...

This is only a short walk but the beach at the end is unlike anything else. The west coast has some very strong destructive waves and very resistant rock; this mix creates stunning erosional features such as caves and pristine pebble beaches. We went after a heavy downpour which created mini waterfalls from the cliffs.

Stunning walk scenery and it is so quick (half and hour or so) that you can do it on the road.

The Truman Track is a small hiking trail north of Punakaiki which is about 45km north of Greymouth. Blink and you'll miss the entrance. We ventured here on our investigation of the area having just come from the Pancake Rocks. Set in a tropical microclimate on the alpine west coast, the maintained wide path passes through palm forest before descending to the beach. This is where it got interesting. The winds and waves had sculpted artistic and scenic features of significant size in the coastal cliff and had dug caves into the soft bank. It provided many subjects for the photographer. Treading through the pea gravel a foot or more deep was difficult but we were rewarded with an interesting and different experience in our exploration of New Zealand
