Considering after a cyclone we were very lucky to be able to stay at Punakaiki Beachfront Motel. The managers worked all day to clean up the mess that the cyclone had done to the place. We had a 3 bedroom villa for a family of 5 over night. I must say it was one of our best nights sleeps we had during our 16 day trip to the South Island. We had dinner down the road at the hotel which was a 2 minute drive. Its a great place for a stop over.

Very friendly staff, location very nice on the beach. The place recently had some damage from bad weather, but in general the place looked tired. Clearly some long due maintenance has been postponed.accomodation does not meet 2018 standards. Furthermore the cottage was not very clean, codwebs on the ceiling, dust.
This place could really be fantastic if properly cleaned and maintained.

We had a great 1-night stay here. Stayed in cottage #5. There's free parking, it's quiet, and it's right on the beach! Reasonably priced and the rooms are nice and clean. The check-in was super easy, especially since we arrived fairly late (around 7 pm). They gave us great tips about the area. The pancake rocks are down the road. Wish we had some time to hike the local trails. One of a couple places that are on our list for when we come back.
