The Waikino Hotel Bar and Kitchen was founded in 1897 to serve the miners working in the Karangehake Gorge back in the 1800's It was flooded once or twice from the river below which must have been scary. I can't speak for the hotel but the restaurant is really olde worlde. Surrounded by mining equipment and photos of old miners. The gorge railway runs close by and the walks are super. Try the Chowder. It is excellent and a real meal in itself.
Half way through the gorge travelling from Auckland it is on th left just past the bridge carpark on the right. Easy to miss. Pool tables

after passing by this old hotel in the gorge for over 40 years and never stopping, we decided to try it for lunch after walking one of the trails. The cosy beer garden out the back was a very pleasant surprise, and pleased we could bring our dog too. The nachos were great, very generous and tasty. Perfect for a cold beer on a hot summer afternoon

How many of you have passed the historic Waikino Hotel in the Karangahake Gorge & not realised it is the home of scrumptious awarded gin by Kamai Brewing & Distilling? We took a group there last week & tasted a wonderful range - Dry Gin, Gold Gin, Ruby Gin, Dark Gin & Truffle Gin. What a treat! And the food was scrumptious. Awesome seafood chowder- best most had ever tasted, and up-market hamburgers, classy pizzas, delicious fish 'n chips, arancini balls plus, plus. A great place for a birthday, Hens' Party or general celebration of any sort. The tasting was accompanied by a really interesting presentation. We'll be back with more groups.

I’ve passed this pub a zillion times over the last 30 years travelling from Tauranga to Auckland but never stopped. After biking along the trail through the tunnel close by we decided to call in for a late lunch. What a fantastic surprise, a warm fire friendly staff and a menu to suit everyone - fish and chips, burgers, meat platter - the fries were fab too and just what we needed after 2 hours of exercise. The ambiance was great and we’ll certainly be back as it’s ideal for all ages - spot on and thumbs up to the chef
