We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the wine and loved the service. We found the negative reviews here amusing. Kim is incredibly knowledgeable but doesn't take himself seriously and likes to joke, some of it sarcastically. We loved it! Highly recommend the winery and hope you get to engage with Kym!

Torlesse was one of a number of wineries we visited through the Waipara region, and definitely the most disappointing of the lot. The wines were just ok, but didn’t standout like some others we tried on this trip. However what did stand out was the rudeness and snobbery of the owner. Aside from a few off comments here and there, he also bagged out entire regions of Australian vineyards as if he was the King of Grapes and they dared compete with him with dirty water. He is the wine snob of wine snobs.

There are plenty of other wineries in Waipara. Go to any of them instead.

Torlesse wines is a small winery just off State Highway 1 in Canterbury. It’s not the biggest but the wines are amazing and the wines are well priced. The owners are friendly and whilst they don’t have a menu are more than happy to put together a platter (although it’s probably best to call ahead in case it gets busy.

We were toured NZ in a camper van and decided to make an unplanned stop in the Waipara Wine Valley on our way back to Christchurch. We read that Torlesse rented bikes for the nearby Waipara Valley Vineyard Trail so decided to check it out. It turned out to be one of the most fun, unexpected adventures of the trip!

The trail is under development so most of the time we had no idea if we were actually on the path or trespassing. It literally took us through vineyards - real working vineyards, not the showy parts tourists usually see - past sheep, up hills, and through hedges. We loved mountain bike wine touring!

Kym let us park our van in their lot overnight so when we got back we were did a tasting with the family. They were very welcoming and laid back. We had visited the other 3 wineries on the trail so I can't actually assess the wine we tried but they had a lot of varieties you don't normally come across in NZ (including port) so they are unique.

If you are in or around Christchurch, and you like wine, then definitely spend a day in the Waipara Valley and don't miss the visit to Torlesse.

Mine host Kim made the visit, lots of knowledge presented to the group in plain English.
The wines were stunning as was the port.
Try the Gerwurtztraminer and the port. You won't regret it
