When we called to reserve two rooms, the host didn't ask for a credit card number or many confirming details, for that matter. On the evening of our reservation, we called at 7pm to cancel (due to difficult issues with travel and weather), and we were treated extremely rudely, even when we offered to pay full price for the rooms. They took our credit card information over the phone, and we asked them to send us a receipt by email. They charged us for the rooms and sent the receipt with a nasty note attached! We paid for our rooms voluntarily because it was the morally correct thing to do, and they treated us with such shame and complete lack of compassion.
