I ordered their fried chicken dish. Unfortunately, the chicken was dry, and to my dismay, the mashed potatoes were cold in the middle. When I raised this concern and returned the dish, there was zero apology. The lady in the kitchen appeared uninterested, wearing a frown that seemed to convey, 'What do you want?'

Regrettably, no one suggested a proper resolution until a server finally offered to heat up the dish, albeit without any comment or acknowledgment. The lack of empathy and professionalism was apparent throughout. I believe this establishment requires significant staff training in hospitality, and their kitchen could benefit from a touch of passion in preparing food rather than just focusing on quick service.

What surprised me the most was the positive reviews this place has received. In my experience, it fell short of delivering both in terms of service and food quality. I hope they consider reevaluating their approach to ensure a better dining experience for future patrons

Very good coffee, the best I‘ve had so far in NZ. Very friendly staff with chilled atmosphere.
I had a long black which just hit the spot.
Interior design is very hipster-like, which is nice.

Loved the great food & excellent coffee. We stopped on our way to Christchurch for brunch & bc of the queue thought we’d have to wait a while but the drinks and food came out amazingly fast. Five stars to the chef - my halumi burger was delicious and the kids loved their eggs. My husband had a milkshake called a Kick in The Nuts - double espresso - divine, lol. And the prices were good.

We just stopped in for a takeaway coffee on the way through, but when I saw the cheese and onion scones, I had to try one of those too (shared it as was big!). The menu looked good and at another time we would have stopped for food. The coffee was great and the caramel toffee that came with it a welcome surprise (I don't have a particular sweet tooth, but it hit the spot). The scone was great, crunchy outside and soft inside and the staff a pleasure to deal with. We didn't stay long or eat in, but the place had some neat quirky decor and kept me entertained looking around while I waited on the coffee. I can definitely see why the ratings are good with The Running Duck and can certainly recommend stopping in if you are in the area.
