“So beautiful”

Gilfach Nature Reserve
Reviewed 2 July 2018

These folks really have got the signing right for all the walk options and most are easy and not too long. They make it all so interesting and enjoyable. We did the 2.3m walk in the time suggested and loved the variety of scenery and areas: woods, meadows, river etc.

Gilfach nature reserve is a little gem of a nature reserve. It is peaceful and quiet and on the day we visited not busy at all. If you are interested in birds there is plenty to see. There are a few circular walks that are not too stressful on the legs, but require good walking shoes/boots. There are two car parks: one as you just come off the A470 and one further along at the "old farmyard", where there are toilet facilities. We spent a good part of the day there walking, enjoying the scenery and bird watching (red kites, dippers, pied flycatcher and redstart). A lovely relaxing day out.
Ps. there is no charge to enter the reserve but donations are welcomed.

We were staying at a camping site in Llangurig. Had visited Rhayader for some lunch and decided to stop off on our way back to the site.

We gave our dogs a walk on their extendable leads from the front car park, along a fern covered path.

We noticed cars were driving along the road and wondered where they were heading.
We wanted to see the Dippers and followed signs to a 'Dipper viewing hide'. Sadly it was far too hot to walk the dogs far, so we had to return to the Campervan.

They had a good drink of fresh water and were fine to travel up along the road, further into the Nature Reserve.

The road is narrow with passing places and we didn't meet too many obstacles before arriving at a small parking area, close to the Dipper Hide and what looked like a very interesting information barn.
We decided to leave this area for a future visit when we would have more time to explore the area.
It looks very interesting indeed. On route to the Dipper Hide, we had seen Foxgloves, heard Cookoo's in the distance. We haven't heard a Cookoo's call in years. !!
Watched Red Kites soaring over head, as they do over our camping site. !

We will be back to explore this area in more detail. So handy to our nearby site. Alive with Nature. Really looking forward to our next visit.

Whilst in the area I called in, glad I did, saw and photographed my first Dipper and Pied Flycatcher..!!! Good facilities with great birding and opportunities to go find your own space to watch the birds (I hate birding in a crowd..). Oh and the scenery/setting is stunning..

This is an interesting place as was the senic drive there. We attempted the circular walk but did not complete. The birds were very quiet so we did not see many. The information center is very good and staff very helpful. We will definalty go back, we stopped near the waterfall for lunch.
